Black Mountain is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named for the old train stop at the Black Mountain Depot and is located at the southern end of the Black Mountain range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Southern Appalachians.

I visited the Chamber of Commerce looking for advice about local hiking. My travel companion and I visited the visitors center to ask for the local trails and to inquire about restaurants. The woman sitting behind the desk when we visted was not at all enthusiastic or helpful. We felt like we were interrupting her morning routine....we tried to ask for directions and she wasn't specific or helpful. We had questions about the hiking map due to the fact that the print was too small for us to read (even with our glasses) and she replied "it's all there". We then asked about area restaurants and she handed us a generic map......all in all, it felt like she is not very enthusiastic about helping travelers.

A quick tour of a small and diverse property by the super knowledgeable owner, Van, is worth every penny! He proudly showed off the ways he is diversified his work in collaboration with various universities through grants to support his small operation. Learned all about how hops are grown, very time consuming! He sells to a local Black Mountain brewery--would love to try his beer. Plus he has an area of blue berries. We learned all about the life cycle and migration of the Monarch butterfly and got to visit inside his Butterfly House--think a tiny version of Butterfly World. And... learned about solar panels and saw chickens---a neat experience for a pair of true city slickers. Van was proud and knowledgeable, and very patient with an question-filled first grader who was a part of our tour.

Coming from Washington, DC I was not expecting much- and what a pleasant surprise. Went to see an Etta James tribute - which was awesome.
The place is good size, probably seats 150, but you aren't packed in like sardines. All seats have good views.
They also have 4 beers on tap, and wine. Didn't look at the wine, but many were drinking it throughout the evening.
Parking was plentiful.
Highly recommended!

It's possible to catch some genuinely good shows here, from local visual artists to local drama. I've even been there for a benefit/dance party. The staff has always been "on" with friendly efficiency and old fashioned hospitality.

Located in the old Black Mountain fire station, the Swannanoa Valley Museum and History Center presents exhibits on local history, the environment, and traditional culture. Its current special exhibit on the architect Rafael Guastavino offers an enlightening look into his developments in early twentieth-century public architecture and an example of the career and work of a brilliant and enterprising immigrant. Parking is available in a small lot adjacent to the museum building, which is located near restaurants and shops in Black Mountain, a pleasant town to visit. Admission is by donation. The Museum also supports a series of local hikes to historic locations and on classic trails in the local mountains.

At Black Mountain Ciderworks + Meadery, we craft genuine cider and mead from local apples and honey. We embrace the terroir of our Southern apples, fermenting cider in small batches blended from heirloom apples throughout the harvest and pressed in house. Our cider is real cider, never filtered or pasteurized, and we never add sugars, concentrates, or manufactured flavors. With mead, we focus on hydromels, meads fermented with a higher water content to achieve a lower-gravity, more sessionable mead. We find that hydromels are more approachable than traditional higher-gravity meads because they are more cider and beer-like (but still gluten free), and quite suitable for serving on draft.

If you love cider and mead as I do (or even if you're a newbie), then this place definitely needs to be on your itinerary if you're anywhere near the place. Everything is done in small batches since the owner is committed to experimentation. Just means that you can keep coming back for more and always have something different to try. The place is inviting, super chill, has plenty of parking, is pretty easy to find, and is just a great place to do sampling or enjoy some pints.

This is a charming place for all ages where the scene changes daily even hourly due to the views, the visitors, the waterfowl, and the weather. It is a great place for early morning walks alone or with a friend or on-leash pet. Full circuit around the lake is just over a half mile. There is also a tennis court, a picnic pavilion, a children's play area, and swimming pool. Indoors there is meeting, luncheon, and workout space with special provision for "active aging." Summertime free concerts with local musicians on Thursday evenings are a special treat.

I was so pleased to find a place to exercise while in the mountains. This morning I participated in a one-hour aquasize class ($3.00). It meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 9:00. Exercise to music with a terrific teacher! If you are a lap swimmer, lap swimming costs a dollar for the 10:00 - 11:00 slot. They have kickboards you can borrow and there are six lanes to enjoy. Or, if you have kids and they need to get in a pool, they can pay individually (again $3.00) for a day-pass. The staff is very professional and friendly. The pool slopes from shallow to deep water (depth is 6'6") so you don't have to navigate stairs. You are right next to Lake Tomahawk that has a walking track and swingsets. The City also hosts free events, so check it out!!!

Cherry Street Gallery is one of our spots to visit every time I go to Black Mountain to see my mom. They have a wide variety of crafts, art, photography that may be traditional to contemporary and even a flair for the whimsical. One of the reasons I always go by to see what is new is I know they strive to provide beautiful, high quality, affordable art. When we lived in Texas, I would have items shipped home so I would not break while traveling. They would take care of the packing. New item in gallery is the wine room which features fine handcrafted American wines and North Carolina wines. You just got to go in...won't leave with a unique purchase.
