Ermita de la Pena Trail

Reviewed By amstone_ch - Zurich, Switzerland

This hike is a great way to get to know an other side of Fuerteventura. The path is easy doable, taking approximately 90min. You start just below the Casa de la Naturalezza in Vega de Rio Palmas. Park right of the little bridge that crosses the river. From there direction valley alongside (or most of the time in) the river bank. There are hiking marks on the way. You will exit the river bank after approx. 25 minutes and continue on a gravel paths to the dam. No much water left, but a nice constriction. Continue down the steps and the path until you find a white small chapel. That can be your turning point if you car is in Vega. If not you can continue. There is no other shop or restaurant other than the casa de la naturalezza. So bring water, sun protection and food for your hike.

Iglesia Catedral de Santa Maria de Betancuria

Reviewed By L7768EQdavidd - Devon, United Kingdom

Friday 13th November and we visited the historic and old capital of Fuerteventura. No visit to the Town Betancuria is complete without a visit to the beautiful old church. From the moment we entered the church we were captivated. Walking along the old stone floor, which led us to the magnificent main altar screen (reredos) at the rear of the Church. It reaches high up to the wooden beamed ceiling, it is ornately carved, painted gold and red, adorned with religious images and statues with a large crucifixion image at the top, stunning. To the left of the main altar is another altar which is equally as amazing. Make sure to visit the sacristy on the left hand side of the altar. Where old vestments, statues and regalia are on display. The ornate ceiling, with its red and gold paint, is  astoundingly beautiful, has to be seen. The ceiling tops the walls that have colourful religious images painted on them. There are a number of statues dotted around the Church. Towards the rear of the Church take a look up at intricate woodwork in the ceiling. There is an entrance fee of €1.50 per person to the enter the Church. Photography is permitted but no flash. The Church does need a bit of restoration work in places, this does not detract from how beautiful it is here. In July 2019 the Church was declared to be an Asset of Cultural Interest by the government of the Canary Islands.

One of the greenest places on the island we visited on our self guided tour. Took a couple of hours to stroll on the streets of the town feeling the vibes and learning about its history and importance in island’s live. If you plan going there link it with other nearby places to make it a day trip.

We came here as part of a tour of the southern half of Fuerteventura. It was definitely the best part! Got to meet some lovely animals, try loads of goats cheese and other Canarian foods! Bought some lovely Honey Rum as a souvenir. Would thoroughly recommend! Just a little out of the way.
