Great place to learn about history. They had a bunch of different buildings moved there and rebuilt to preserve history. The buildings were all open but certain ones had people in them demonstrating different crafts. They were demonstrating candle making, Iron works, broom making, etc. Apparently each day offers different demonstrating. They also had a general store with a post office and checkers and benches that you could play to show you the way life would have been during that era. They had a shop where you could get hot dogs and such to eat and the food was reasonable prices. They have special event weekends as well such as Civil war demonstrations, Old West and others so be sure to check their schedule. It only cost $10 a person to get in so it is not expensive.

Bedford County Covered Bridge Driving Tour

Bedford County is blessed with 14 covered bridges. Built approximately 100 years ago by craftsmen who worked almost entirely by hand, these structures withstand the rain, snow and hard use of the traveling public. The county's bridges range in length from the 136 foot Herline Bridge near Manns Choice, PA to the 56 foot Palo Alto bridge south of Hyndman. Twelve spans are Burr-truss bridges, named after their designer, Theodore Burr. These bridges are held in place by a set of trusses that interact with the arch that spans the length of the bridges, creating added strength. A lot of people ask, "Why did they cover the bridges?". One answer is that wooden bridges with exposed superstructures can rot ... covering and roofing them protects them from the weather so they'll last longer.

For aficionados of history this is a great way to see the Bedford County countryside in a leisurely way. There are a number of good photographic opportunities. Some bridges do not present great parking locations so care must be taken if you wish to get out of the car and walk over or around the bridges.

If you enjoy nature and history this is a very enjoyable area to visit. Our family has had gatherings at Shawnee state park for as long as I can remember whenever we visited PA and after moving here. You can fish, swim, boat, picnic, and the surrounding area has opportunities for viewing historical buildings, antiques, biking and hiking. I would recommend anyone in the area vist the Schellsburg area and Shawnee.

Fort Bedford Museum

Reviewed By sturmvogel2016 - Gibsonia, Pennsylvania

This was a great little museum tucked just behind where the original fort stood and along the river.

There is a little bit of everything in here telling the story of Bedford and the area from over 200 years ago up thru the mid 20th century. A Civil War Cannon and Caisson built by a fellow in Bedford back in 1861. Woodworking tools, old photographs of the area and the people. One of an infant dead in the water after the Johnstown Flood is especially poignant.

There are a number of horse drawn wagons and sleighs that are interesting, one a US Mail delivery sleigh from 1907.

The English flag on the wall in the main room was interesting if only for the fact that after 250 years or so, it's still there and in one piece.

The lady on staff was exceptionally pleasant and helpful and there is a small museum store on-site for any memento's that you would like to take home with you.

Not necessarily about the Fort, but in front of the Fort is a very nice bike path and playground / picnic area for families; a number of younger boys were fishing off the dam even.

Nothing compares with the thrill of a half mile dirt track..The sights, sounds, & the smells of excitement of Friday night racing are something you never forget..The promoters are first class, the fairgrounds themselves are classic, and with all the other great things going on in Bedford; why not make a weekend of it ? My first visit was in the early 60's; now I'm in my early 60's and still get that feeling of excitement in my stomach on race night...Family entertainment at its finest, I bring a date & make her drive home.(she's crazier than i am), but with all the affordable lodging, & restaurants we've extended it out to Sunday on more than a few occasions...
