Béarn (French pronunciation: [be.aʁn]; Gascon: Bearn or Biarn; Basque: Bearno or Biarno; Latin: Benearnia, Bearnia) is one of the traditional provinces of France, located in the Pyrenees mountains and in the plain at their feet, in southwest France. Along with the three Basque provinces of Soule, Lower Navarre, and Labourd, the principality of Bidache, as well as small parts of Gascony, it forms in the southwest the current département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64). The capitals of Béarn were Beneharnum (until 841), Morlaàs (from ca. 1100), Orthez (from the second half of the 13th century), then Pau (beginning in the mid-15th century).

Great time kayaking down the Ossau and jumping from bridge. Experienced guide gave us the video free but kayaking alone was well worth the money. Lots of fun. Would recommend to everyone whatever age.Thanks for your writing your feelings ; Ossau River is one of most beautifull trip in the area. Videosare always offered after trip. See you soon!

Read the history before you go. If you are religious this can be a good stop if you area in the area. I am not religious and this seemed more of a commercial place rather than a place to practice your religion.

We did the trip yesterday, taking advantage of the perfect weather (warm, cloudless, light wind). Although it's low season, it was extremely busy such that purchase of our tickets at 11am got us seats only on the 14.00 train. As it was such a nice day, we were happy to wander along an abandoned railway line from the top cable car station to what appears to be the former train station. We sat a while watching griffon vultures and Alpine choughs which flew quite close at times.
The train trip is superb, with awesome scenery the whole way. At the terminus there is little to do apart from walking up to the Reservoir and across the dam. As nearly everyone does this and 2 trains arrive at the same time, it's tedious climbing up the rocky path, getting stuck behind slow-moving elderly people. Nice views at the top, however.
There was a huge queue for the return trains when we returned to the station 20 minutes before the departure time (16.15). We got on a train leaving at that time but a lot of people didn't. Not sure if they then had to wait till the scheduled next and final departures at 17.15 or if intermediate ones run when it's so busy.
It was a really enjoyable trip though it's perhaps not for the faint-hearted as there are sheer drops along much of the railway line.
No idea how they can claim it's the highest railway line in Europe at about only 2000m! The Jungfrau station in Switzerland is at 3454m and even Kleine Scheidegg station is at 2061m.

I usually don't like zoo's...it's sad to see the animals penned up in little cages and pacing back and forth-not here. The place has a family run, cozy feel, like the people really care, the grounds are well kept and clean and the animals look truly happy. Alot of the animals are running free (just enter a gated area) like the kangaroos, wallabies, some little deer\bunny things, and of course the peacocks, whom I got to feed by hand! Others have large natural open areas, and all look very healthy. The monkeys are really cute, and know how to give a show! I hear they are about to open a new area for the humans to walk freely in the area of the Lemur monkeys. So far it looks well done, and I look forward to coming back to experience the new attraction, and re-visit all the others. PS-Plan to be at the zoo at feeding time (around 5pm) that is when the excitement begins!
The zoo is located just outside of Pau, in Asson.

There is no doubt that the caves are amazing with huge chambers lit sympathetically with ability to touch the limestone. You descend down 200 or so steps on your journey and at times need to watch your head but also the slightly damp footing. The walkways are generally secure however. It may not be suitable for the old or those with walking difficulties. It is not a short walk and can be cool so wrap up. Visitors with claustrophobia will not enjoy it as at times there is a long walk through a narrow fault line which makes you wonder what would happen if it moved again. The boat trip is only just over 100 yards and although a feature of advertising don't get excited about it - although children might. Finally there is a long train ride through narrow tunnels which is quite exciting. The guide was helpful but had to deal with 3 languages at once. Also sometimes there were 2 guides speaking to different groups at once which made it difficult to follow. The immense caves speak for themselves but there is an attempt to characterise the rocks into people or buildings which is really not needed. We visited on a quiet day but I suspect that at times there can be quite a wait to enter the caves. You will need to leave 1.5 hours for the time in the caves and on coming out there is the usual large trinket shop. We booked a trip at a kiosk in Lourdes at the entrance to the Sanctuary and the bus stops outside the hotels on the river. The cost was about €22 each allowing for a group discount. Journey time is about 30 minutes and worthwhile as it is through beautiful countryside which is a pleasant break from the bustle of Lourdes. The only problem we has was that there was a 40 minute wait for the bus to return so allow plenty of time. The toilets were described as disgusting and some of our party refused to use them. However overall this is a trip well worth taking.

Laurent Poublan of Pau is an excellent canyon guide; a masterful rigger; and dynamic individual.
I went canyoning with Laurent and his team as a day trip out of Pau and the entire experience was fantastic. Laurent organised all the transport and access as well as perfect training. Inside the canyon he was in his element and clearly controlled the entire process.
The equipment was perfect and the safety absolute.
A definite must do experience if you are in this part of the world.

We've been here before and delight in buying their local wine and supporting the area's economy. This area is well known for its sweet white wines but it also does very nice reds, whites, and rosés. Very pleasant staff and they gave us a half bottle as a gift to add to the wine we bought.
