10 Things to do in Battery Park City That You Shouldn't Miss

December 14, 2021 Tynisha Seiler

Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.

We stumbled into Brookfield Place totally by accident. What an AMAZING find, especially for foodies! Le District, a 30,000-square-foot French marketplace is a French-foodie's dream located within the Mall! There are cafes on the outside, French restaurants, French candies, French Bakery, French Crepes, you name it, they have it! The place is INCREDIBLE! Besides the scrumptious food, there are designer shops to browse and check out. During our visit, they had a Belle and Snoopy display with them dressed and posed in all kinds of designer outfits dressed by designers from around the world. It was so cute. I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND a stop in to check out the mall and OF COURSE, Le District! Museum of Jewish Heritage

On view until May 2nd Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not Far Away The Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust is New York’s contribution to the global responsibility to never forget. The Museum is committed to the crucial mission of educating diverse visitors about Jewish life before, during, and after the Holocaust. The third largest Holocaust museum in the world, the Museum of Jewish Heritage anchors the southernmost tip of Manhattan, completing the cultural and educational landscape it shares with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

We went here on the advice of our friend Robert Jan van Pelt, who is one of the exhibition’s organizers. The show is brilliantly organized, with a skilful blend of general European and German history from the later Middle Ages to the Nazi era, with objects and stories that illustrate that history. The focus is on the Nazi period, with the persecution of Jews and Roma at the centre. The use of objects and the stories behind them make the museum experience more real, as do the interviews with survivors. We both know a lot about the Holocaust, but this exhibition surpasses anything we have ever seen elsewhere. The measure of our involvement may be inferred from the fact that we arrived at noon, took out three quarters of an hour for lunch, and had not quite reached the end of the exhibition when the museum closed at six. I recommend this exhibition most highly, not least because it carries a powerful message of the dangers of nationalisms that are ethnically exclusive, and the dangers of demonizing “outsider” groups and peoples. That message is as relevant today as it was in the first half of the twentieth century. We’ll try to get back to it before we leave New York.
