Pecs Cathedral

One of the most treasured medieval monuments was founded by King Stephen I in the 11th century.

Most unusual Cathedral we've ever seen. Huge building project around it which is part of the local University. Very tastefully done and the re-housing of the statues of the Apostles is quite stunning. The interior of the Cathedral is undergoing a quite magnificent restoration of the walls which is breath-taking. The Cathedral organ looks and sounds stunning. Do not miss this wonderful place.

Early Christian Mausoleum

Sopianae, predecessor of Pécs in the Roman times had its late Roman Paleochristian cemetery included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in the year 2000. In their architecture and wall-paintings the excavated finds present the Early Christian burial architecture and art of the Northern and Western provinces of the Roman Empire. From among the Hungarian world heritage sites the Early Christian cemetery is the only one that has won itself a place on the UNESCO world heritage list in the category of culture-historical architecture.

It is hard to find educational places to take your kids to where they would learn something in a non-boring manner. This place really keeps them engaged because it is like a maze they can explore. It is also a great activity to do on a cold, rainy/snowy day. Those are, as well, few and far between if you are not visiting Budapest.

Szechenyi Ter

Reviewed By Explore809648 - Freckleton, United Kingdom

Lovely Dotto ride around the city and relaxing at one of the many cafe bars around the square. Visited the old mosque (now a Catholic Church) and a short walk to the beautiful Cathedral. Lots of wonderful statues and steeped in history. Coffee and cakes in the lovely cathedral cafe. Spent the whole day just drinking in the atmosphere of this great university city.

Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kassim Church of Gyertyaszentelo Boldogasszony

The former Turkish mosque, built in the late 16th century, now serves as a Catholic church featuring a grand cupola, prayer niches and keel-arch windows.

This place is an architectural gem. Beautiful interior design that preserves Ottoman simplicity at its best, but also superb statues of Jesus, the Virgin and various saints. The preservation has been top notch, one can still see a few Allahu Akbar frescoes on the walls. I could spend hours here, marveling at the light that filters through the stained windows.

Impressive tower, proudly standing over the city of Pécs with a height of 197 meters...we hiked all the way up here from downtown, the trails are well marked and easy enough...great views for reward!
