Drop Surf Center

A well established surf school offering 2 classes everyday ( around 10h30 & 16h00 - depending on the tides) with qualified instructors. Classes are small and focused providing tuition for beginner, intermediate and advanced level surfers. Equipment rental and accommodation is also available.

If you are an "intermediate" surfer it can be hard to find the right place to go to get classes you really benefit from.
In contrast to the other plentiful surf schools in the Peniche region -which mostly resemble factory farming- the atmosphere at the Drop Surf Center is familiar without lack of professionalism.
Working on turns/cut backs/floaters, simply your posture, improving paddling techniques or understanding the different surf spots and their breaking zones/channels everything in theory on the land as well as in the water using video analysis and the constantly attentive eyes of Nelson made me really improve my Surfing!
Depending on the conditions you can be sure to surf in the best spot there is for that exact day and the things you want to learn. He constantly motivates you to take more waves, work on yourself and believe in your own strength -not the sitting around behind the waves like in the other "advanced" classes you see a lot. At the same time it's really fun being in the water together.
The all in all really small groups were well selected so that no one remains behind his or her potential. I had so much "standing time" -the only possibility to really start getting better once you left the white water- and I am glad to have surfed so many nice waves.
I am really happy that I dropped in the other day and got to know Nelson as well as the rest of the friendly team. It really enriched my time in Baleal.
I am sure I will come back to the Peniche region -and one of the reasons is that I know how quickly I can improve my Surfing with a couple of lessons at Drop.

Praia da Areia Branca

Reviewed By KathleenR_28 - Port Dover, Canada

Wide and long, with waves that draw surfers from many countries in Europe, this beach is beautiful. On warm and sunny days, and during low tides, walk along the beach that could take you all the way to Paimogo (with a small ruin up on the hill). I enjoyed feeling the sand under my feet and watching people catch octopus from rocks while my friends and I went on a hike to Paimogo (around 2.5 kms.). If you are into hiking, there is also a trail head that starts at the bridge over the river. The trail goes all the way to Lourinha (around 4 kms. one way).
For the beach lvoers, during the summer and fall, this beach gets busy but there is still enough space to find your own little plot of sand to lie down and sunbathe.
During rainy season (winter), the waves bring in all sorts of garbage (dried wood) into the beach but the municipal employees clean them, not right away but on a regular basis.
If you get hungry or thirsty, there are cafes close to the beach.
And why not end the day by having a glass of porto and enjoying the beautiful sunsets.

Thiis museum is small but full of interesting items mainly sourced from the local area. The museum is funded mainly by visitors and supporters with its main attraction, dinosaur eggs, being found by the mother and sister of their chief paleontologist Prof. Octavio Mateus, whose father was previously the curator there. The staff there are all passionate about their work and guided tour is well worth it.

Stunning, very natural, not over taken by the usual sun beds restaurants. Very friendly people good English speaking, clean, can be windy, and can be hilly, depending where you stay, we were at the far end of Foz, supermarket was 30 min walk, a car not essential as taxi was easily obtained.

Was in Portugal for 3 weeks this summer. I love this beach!!!!! It's spacious and beautiful!!!! Parking gets busy as the day goes on but you can normally get parking at least on the street. The beach can get busy but not overcrowded. The tide can come up so be careful if you set up close to the water.

This is a few min drive from Peniche, a coastal road driving next to the coast sculpted by the sea and wind. There are not many spots open but several closed and in ruin fishing houses and, at the end a light house. Although there is no much to do a ride with a few stops is worthwhile.
