10 Things to Do in Atlantic City That You Shouldn't Miss

July 21, 2017 Augustus Redeker

It's the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas. Atlantic City's casinos draw tourists by the car- and bus-load, but even if your main objective is to play some blackjack, you'll want to save time for sightseeing. Stroll along the famous boardwalk with its numerous amusements and eateries or visit the historic, recently restored Absecon Lighthouse. Several fine courses attract golf enthusiasts, and in summer, local beaches are popular with families. Water-based activities include parasailing, charter fishing and tall ship cruises. Casino hoppers have 12 establishments to choose from, which run the gamut from elegance to a Wild West theme, so there's something for everyone's taste. Those who remember Atlantic City in its pre-gambling days can wax nostalgic with a taste of saltwater taffy, which has been an Atlantic City specialty for over 100 years.

Sad to say, as a native of New Jersey, who came home to visit relatives, after a long time away, our stop in Atlantic City was VERY DISAPPOINTING !

BOARDWALK- 1/5
OVERALL NOT WOTH YOUR TIME OR MONEY.
Building after building in badly needed maintenance, let alone most needing renovations, looking like nothing has been taken care of for a decade or longer.

Dirty store after dirty store with aggressive attendants, hawking at you to visit their store, mostly retail oriented with a few food locations, selling that great .99 cent hot dog, that is probably made of the leftover scraps at the slaughter house or pizza hat looks like its been around for days.

The usual problems with aggressive homeless, beggars and most annoying a group of VERY AGGRESSIVE Cycle cart vendors.

Cycle Cart Vendors, who make NYC cab drivers look like Mother Teresa, stand right outside of every Casino, so you have to run into them, and if they miss you there, there are up and down the Boardwalk bothering you every few minutes trying to get you to take a ride in their cycle carts.

It is SAD to see the Boardwalk in such poor condition, and Atlantic City has no one to blame but themselves.

Too many places today, think they can rest on the past reputations and continue to get visitors.

SUGGESTIONS
If there wasn't so many vacant, rundown old hotels on the way in, the boardwalk was in better shape, and the police controlled all the homeless, dealers and aggressive vendors, on and around the Boardwalk, my opinion would be much different.

DEMO
All the old hotels & buildings that are vacant, abandoned etc. A Vacant field is MUCH better.

POLICE
Actually make make a presence on the boardwalk and make tourist feel safer, instead of letting the homeless, and aggressive pan handlers and others run the boardwalk, for the entire year, instead of just the 3 months if Summer.

HOUSING
The towns and Cities should make an effort to house the homeless, there are so many abandoned hotels that could be renovated and used.

Demo old hotels on the way in and building decent affordable housing for needy and the regular people to live at an affordable price.

CODE ENFORCEMENT
Can anyone one say "Code Enforcement" ?.

How about going after the significant amount of run down stores hotels etc and enforce codes and either make owners repair or demo and take the property if they cannot afford or want to make the needed repairs.

Help the residents and businesses with low cost loans or grants to help make improvements is another idea.

The State of New Jersey should be EMBARRASSED by the current POOR CONDITIONS in and around the Boardwalk and most of the surrounding area, I am as a native of NJ, come home for a visit.

Stayed 2 nights at this hotel. When looking at where to stay, we’d always been happy at their location in Las Vegas. This location is NOTHING like it. The amenities were all closed, even though they advertised them as year round. The room was decent but they have mostly super old slots from decades ago. The staff was slow on service. The entire floor smelled like marijuana and when brought to their attention, they laughed and said it didn’t. Parking is so far from anything and the garage and hotel are in disrepair. The food was overpriced and lacking. Not somewhere we would go again.
