Memorial Acqui Division

Reviewed By MadagascarJoe - Whitehaven, United Kingdom

Before visiting the memorial I recommend reading “Lost Sons of the Mediterranean. Kefalonia - September 1943 by Pietro Giovanni Liuzzi I knew of the massacre of the soldiers from the Acqui Division from reading the book and watching the film, Captain Correlies Mandolin. The memorial is about 15 minutes walk out of Argostoli it is very clean well maintained. There is also a small shrine to the right of the memorial dedicated to Captain Arpala and his men. With the ruins of a building next to it which Im led to believe was a chapel. If you keep walking down the hill at the T junction which heads towards Lassi there is a pit and memorial to 136 soldiers shot and thrown into the pit. The pit I found the saddest knowing what happened there in 1943

Corgialenios Istoriko kai Laografiko Mouseio

The Museum's aim is to preserve, conserve and disseminate the cultural heritage and tradition of Cephalonia, along with the elements that give evidence of the Ionian civilization, with the particularities of that social era, especially during the foreign occupations (1204-1864) as well as the portrayal of the island before the earthquakes of 1953.

Always nice when you visit somewhere to learn a little of the history as well as just visit the tourist attractions. There is lots to see here for the modest entry fee of 4€ - the section with the photos of before, and the aftermath of, the 1953 earthquake was particularly fascinating. Well worth a visit on your tour of Argostoli.

Vouti Beach

Reviewed By ExploCaty - Belgrade, Serbia

A beautiful turquoise water beach, this beach in my opinion has the most beautiful turquoise in Cephalonia next to Mirtos beach. Special praise for the little tavern above the beach with the most beautiful views, delicious food and the wonderful people who work there, for them the highest praise.

Avithos Beach

Reviewed By Seatroutphil

We stayed 7 to 14 September at the Avithos Beach Resort (Simpson Travel) just up from the beach. We swam at the beach twice a day. Perfect for safe swimming except there was a thin band of pebbles at the water’s edge which you had to step across if not wearing shoes. Great beach bar (though expensive) and sun beds and parasols were available for hire. There were two good tavernas close to the beach. Biggest thrill was the turtles hatching in the night and early morning and making their way down the beach to the water. I saw them on a couple of mornings when having my morning swim. Highly recommended.

We took a walk across the bridge and admired the lovely views. The bridge is just about at sea level, so you feel like you're walking right on the water over the bay of Argostoli.

Argostoli Harbour

Reviewed By LCB1959 - Burnham-On-Sea, United Kingdom

Argostoli Harbour is a lovely place to amble around at any time. Numerous harbourside cafes and restaurants, lovely fruit markets and fresh fish being sold from the boats tied alongside in the morning. Look out for the loggerhead turtles surrounding the boats in the morning! Recommend visitors cross the stone bridge across to Drapano and also take the ferry over to the quiet town of Lixouri where you can enjoy a meal and a coffee and watch the world go by. Only €2-80 each way for passengers. Beautiful place.

We should have discovered this excellent restaurant earlier in our Kefalonia stay. Excellent fresh fish and very attentive service. Location and views are very satisfying to the eye. Modern decoration and ample seating space.
