Compass and her crew are exceptional, year after year. They care about their horses AND their guests. When we saw the large tourist groups being saddled up and waiting around (nose-to-tail) in the Estes Park location we made the drive to Allenspark and were very glad we did!
This stable feels smaller and more attentive. They keep group sizes small, trails interesting and horses and animals on the grounds are well-loved. This is not a Disney Park on horseback, this is real riding on read animals in Wilderness. The location is wild (we saw a bear while riding) and inspiring, and the riding is challenging. This is not the place to come if you want to brag or show off. This is soft-spoken, honest-to-goodness riding with down-to-earth folks who love horses and want to share that with the rest of us.
Compass, the Livery Boss, and her young crew each year provide excellent quality care for the horses. They even let my son stick around and watch them care for the horses and hear stories about the vet and local ferriers. No other riding stable, that we have found, allows us that kind of personal attention.
We will return every time we are near Estes Park because this is the best stable we've found in any of the western states. Thanks guys!

We just love this shop. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Lots of variety of art, photographs, pottery, glass, etc. A very beautiful collection of things.
I think we leave Estes with something from here every time we visit.

We had a great hike today out to Brainard Lake. The main parking is closed so it free at the moment. The winter parking is open and it's not far from there to the trailhead.
Loads of people were snow shoeing but we just had extra grip things on under our hiking boots and we were fine, the trail is pretty compact but if you deviate or hit a soft spot in the edge you'll be at least a foot deep in snow.
Really really windy in the clearings, but between the trees was great. It took us about 3 hours to get out there and back. On the way home we saw 2 huge mousse on the side of the road!!

We really enjoy this trail. It is best in off season or during week as it is a very popular trail. Lake is beautiful, and you can use the shuttle to bear lake if busy. We have hiked on above to flattop mountain and on into Grand Lake from this trail also. Definitely a must when in the park.

We got here fairly early to get a parking space because the lot can get crowded. The hike is very nice with a lot of flowers right now-forest service ranger said the flowers are at their peak right now. I hesitate to tell too many people about this area just because it does not get as busy as nearby Rocky Mt. National Park.

The chapel is loved by photographers and you should also take some photos. Try to find the chapel open and go inside. The day we were there, the volunteer guide was very knowledagable and her information added to our visit. The area was heavily damaged in the floods of 2013 but the chapel was not damaged. Worth a visit!

Eagle Plume's is visiting a home and enjoying beautiful authentic native arts. The owners are very knowledgable and treat their customers as friends. My personal story is that I used to wait on Charlie Eagle Plum at a restaurant in Estes Park. His memory lives on in the store. Don't miss the little rotating cabinet with earing and pins. I love to open the drawers and discover little treasures! There are things in all price ranges. Don't miss it!

Bear Lake is easily accessible from the Bear Lake trailhead. There is a 0.5 mi/0.8 km loop trail around the lake.
We hiked part of the loop trail (eastern shore) on our way to Flattop Mountain, Hallett Peak, and Bierstadt Lake. It was 9:30am on the Saturday of the Labour Day weekend, and there were so many people doing the loop trail that we couldn't wait to get on the Flattop Mountain trail. Although the lake is beautiful with crystal clear water and perfect mirror reflections, it's not as spectacular and serene as the other alpine lakes in the park (Lake Haiyaha, Mills Lake, the Loch, Lake of Glass, Sky Pond). It was also just too crowded.

The Old Gallery is a center for community and the arts in Allenspark. More than 25 local artists are featured here, as well as a variety of other gifts. It's the only place on Highway 7 in the area that has Verizon cell phone service, and there's free WiFi, as well. There are also art classes and workshops, beading and gourd art classes, writing workshops, yoga and tai chi classes and more. There are also monthly potlucks featuring live music, quarterly Open Mic Nights, Hogabluesa Pig Roast and Blues Fest, Soup Night, a yearly summer musical and more. Locals also have access to a twice monthly Food Bank and year round Community Clothes Closet. There is also a great children's playground behind The Old Gallery. It's worth a stop! All are welcome.

Sprague Lake is located on the drive to Bear Lake. It is also a short distance from the Park and Ride. Nice views even if you don't hike. Easy access from the parking area. Picnic tables available.
