Bibliotheque Habott

Reviewed By FrenchTraveller001 - Paris, France

Saef lives in Chinguetti. He has collected many ancient manuscripts from different libraries around town. Chinguetti is said to be the 7th most important Islamic cultural centre in the world. Saef is a passionate storyteller. He can endlessly tell stories about caravans with 30,000+ camels crossing town and bartering goods between Senegal or Niger with Morocco, Algeria and Europe. The last caravan crossed town in the early 1970s before 4WDs took over. Saef does his best to ensure that the ancient books are properly preserved, which they currently sadly are not despite promises made by UNESCO or different international corporate foundations. He says that those donations never happened. It has now become an emergency to ensure a state of the art preservation of this world heritage for it not to disappear forever.
