10 Things to do in 11th Arr. - Popincourt That You Shouldn't Miss

March 24, 2022 Velvet Mowry

Lingering over pain au chocolat in a sidewalk café, relaxing after a day of strolling along the Seine and marveling at icons like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe… the perfect Paris experience combines leisure and liveliness with enough time to savor both an exquisite meal and exhibits at the Louvre. Awaken your spirit at Notre Dame, bargain hunt at the Marché aux Puces de Montreuil or for goodies at the Marché Biologique Raspail, then cap it all off with a risqué show at the Moulin Rouge.

My advice would be to buy a bit of everything - such affordable, high quality food! We bought a lot of french food: baguette, hot crepes, kouign amann, cheese, cured meat, rotisserie chicken, fresh fruit; and also some turkish style pastries and portuguese custard tarts. I'd say it was some of the best food we've had (in each of those categories). I'd happily go back again next time I'm in Paris.

Quite possibly the highlight of my 4 days in Paris. To be surrounded by the colors, the movement, the art of VanGogh and the accompanying music that ranged from the classical to Nina Simone to Janis Joplin was a beautiful experience. When people ask what I loved about Paris, Atelier Lumieres is what I rave about. Bravo.

Musee Edith Piaf

This small museum houses artifacts belonging to Edith Piaf, the famous singer and entertainer.

The experience of setting up this visit and making it to the "museum" is all part of the adventure! Most definitely a Paris "off the beaten track" experience for Edith Piaf enthusiasts and, if successful, I assure you, you will be very pleased with yourself. As others have explained, one must first make a telephone call to set up your appointment time to visit. We lucked out - the phone was answered immediately (I've read others have had problems) and, because of other reviews of just what to expect, I was prepared. No way to get around that some knowledge of French is required for setting up the appointment and also for the further instructions you receive to get up into the apartment once you've arrived at the building. The very welcoming gentleman's "tour" of the two small rooms filled with Edith Piaf memorabilia is also in French - though he spoke slowly and simply as he pointed things out to me. Three French visitors were there when my college-aged daughter and I arrived. I was absolutely thrilled to see them to be honest - this was without a doubt the sketchiest adventure on our itinerary! The three beamed at us as we came in and we did the same when another small group arrived. You truly feel like you are part of a secret club! No admission fees, but a small donation is requested. Well worth a visit for Edith Piaf admirers up for an adventure - and who realize getting there is part of this fun and somewhat unusual museum experience.
