And, values that are still held in Cuba today. The intricate details to be found all over the statue mirror the life-story of this very clever man who was killed fighting for his beliefs. Far more moving and iconic than the very large statue at the mausoleum.

Cayo Santa Maria

I just returned from my 5th stay at Ocean Casa Del Mar in the breath-takingly Beautiful Cayo Santa Maria. Top notch service was provided by my butler Arley. He was always there to help with any request. In the Buffet Leo, Leidy & Willan were awesome. I also enjoyed the food in the Privilege Restaurant as well as the Blue Moon A La Carte. The best part of my vacation was enjoying the Animation team led by Big Dani. The entire team is good, but it is Dani who has the most ambition and really puts the most effort into seeing that you enjoy your stay. He engages with everyone and his smile and spirit is infectious. Ocean Casa is very lucky to have such highly respected workers as Dani who really seem to care about their job and all hotel guests.

Santa Maria Beach

The beach at Cayo Santa Maria is awesome, it stretches for Kilometers where all the resorts are located, so the beach is similar at all places and its shared so you can walk along the beach through all the resorts. The best beach section though is the one located at the bay behind the sercotel Resort, its your dreams beach.

A place to come if you are interested in learning about the economic history of Cuba. The sugar production brought wealth to this area and the museum gives you some important pieces of information about how it happened. Nice guide and tasty welcome drink. They play a video ( they have it in several languages) to make you " tune in" at the beginning of the tour.

Playa de las Gaviotas

Look pass the 4 cuc admission fee and the 10 mins walk through the forest and you will be rewarded with an amazing feeling of walking onto a piece of paradise. The beach is truly a natural oasis. The sand bars create natural pools and the gentle lapping waves make it an ideal place for kids to play. Bring your water/snacks but leave only your foot prints and take away memories and pictures only. Let's pray they don't develop this spot. In my opinion its much better than playa pilar by a long shot.

Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado

This boxcar museum, east on Independencia just over the river, marks the spot where 18 men under the command of Che Guevara, equipped with rifles and grenades, captured a 22-car armored train containing 350 heavily armed Batista troops. Amazingly, this battle, which took place on December 29, 1958, only lasted 90 minutes. The bulldozer that the guerrillas used to cut the railway line is on a pedestal nearby.

Maybe it depends what tour company you are with but I had no experience of being stopped from entering any of the carriage museums. We arrived, our guide showed the group coupon, and we were free to enter and stroll around as we liked. The sculpture is certainly unusual and worth a picture. They also have the bulldozer and crowbar from the attack (masterminded by Guevara). Each carriage is a mini-museum with old photos and artefacts and one of the few places I visited in Cuba that had English as well as the Spanish text so was easy to go around on your own. A couple of nice souvenir shops across the road too.
