10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Ventura That You Shouldn't Miss

March 19, 2022 Darleen Reid

Ventura, officially the City of San Buenaventura, is the county seat of Ventura County, California, United States. European explorers encountered a Chumash village, referred to as Shisholop, in Ventura while traveling along the Pacific coast. The eponymous Mission San Buenaventura was founded nearby in 1782 where it benefitted from the water of the Ventura River. The town grew around the mission compound and incorporated in 1866. The development of nearby oil fields in the 1920s and the age of automobile travel created a major real estate boom during which many designated landmark buildings were constructed. The mission and these buildings are at the center of a downtown that has become a cultural, retail, and residential district and visitor destination.

Four Brix Winery

Four Brix Winery - an craft winery located in the heart of Ventura - specializes in internationally-inspired wine blends. We produce wines based upon our four favorite grape growing regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. The word "Brix" is a term for measurement of sugar in grapes; therefore Four Brix equals four sweets spots for great wine! With a total production of around 2,500 cases, these wines are very limited and in high demand. It takes strength, creativity and patience to make great wine, kind of like raising children. In fact, our wine is like our children, so we gave them names: Smitten, Zeductive (Zinfandel and Petite Sirah), Temptress, Rhondezvous (Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah) and Scosso (Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot) are a few of our kids. Once you taste the wines, you realize how apropos the names are. When we aren't making wine, we like to hang out with a glass of wine, listening to music and eating great food. Our favorite place to hang out is at the BrixHouse- our tasting room. But we don't like to hang out alone, so we make sure there is always something going on at the BrixHouse. For Club members, affectionately referred to as "BrixHeads", there are exciting Pick Up Parties at least twice annually. Depending on the time of year, you might be able to attend a Concert in the Cellar, Foodie Friday, Dinner in the Tasting Lounge, BBQ Pizza Nights, a Blending Party or maybe just relax in the BrixHouse with a glass of wine, listening to a smooth sax player. Be sure to get on the email list for up-to-date announcements and events. Visit the BrixHouse- it's 1200 square feet with inviting rich, deep colors, high ceilings, couch area and several table and chairs arrangements. We invite guests to relax and stay; enjoy a tasting or maybe a glass or bottle of wine to share with friends. The Barrel & Production rooms are on-site and typically used for special events. But when you stop by, don't be surprised if you are invited to take a tour with one of the owners. Cheers!

Mission San Buenaventura

Easy to pass by (the necessity of first entering a gift shop might confuse potential visitors) Mission San Buenaventura is a serene sanctuary. Awaiting inside is a hidden gem of serenity, beauty and history. This includes centuries-old historic artifacts in an intimate museum, and a meticulously maintained Spanish colonial-era Roman Catholic mission (circa 1809) whose sanctuary area contains an exact replica of “The Pieta” marble sculpture in Vatican. Only one hundred of these copies were created.

Ventura City Hall

Reviewed By jogrow7 - Ventura, United States

San Buenaventura City Hall started out as the Ventura County Courthouse and was built in 1912. It is a State of California Historical Landmark, listed on the National Register for Historic Places. The building sports a copper sheathed dome and an elegant Italian marble foyer. Between the first and second floor windows of City Hall are Gargoyles type faces of priests which serve as a historical reminder that the City of San Buenaventura was one of the nine original Mission towns founded by Father Junipero Serra and Franciscan friars in 1782. You can also see art work by local artists that is displayed on the first and second floors of City Hall. The Ventura City Hall came close to being burned by the Thomas Fire that raged through Ventura in early December 2017. Thanks to the quick response of the Fire Department, it was saved.
