Mariposa (formerly Aqua Fria) is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Mariposa County, California, United States. The population was 2,173 at the 2010 census, up from 1,373 at the 2000 census. Its name is Spanish for "butterfly", after the flocks of monarchs seen overwintering there by early explorers.

Great hidden place, with nice bartender making you try the many beer choices. Today the Fudgement Day: mix of Full Circle and Belching Beever stout (chocolate with peanut butter taste)

Not only was the food delicious but the customer care was top notch. Food was delivered to my car with no waiting (we had called earlier in the day). When we got it home, it was well packaged and hot. The salad was fresh and a delightful mix of salad greens and fresh vegetables. The bread was warm and delicious. The Three Meat Penne flavorful with lots of meat and a well seasoned sauce . My husband and I shared an entree, and the other went in the freezer. IN all a perfect ending to the day, with no dishes to wash! THANK YOU! And even though it was really hard to pass up this time... the chocolate hazel cake is delicious too! Will get it next time.

The California State Mining & Mineral Museum is a specialty museum that contains fantastic crystals, gold, gemstones and mineral specimens from California and around the world. The museum houses the state’s official mineral collection and includes mining artifacts, an underground mine tunnel, an assay office and a working model of a stamp mill. One of the most amazing pieces is the “Fricot Nugget” a breathtaking 13-pound specimen of rare crystallized gold found in 1865. Learn how mining has influenced the history of and economy of California. The museum offers guided tours for schools or other groups (by reservation). There is a junior ranger program for kids and gold panning is offered on selected weekends (call for availability). The Museum Shop has mineral samples, jewelry, gifts and books on geology, prospecting and California history. Come explore the amazing world of gems and mineral crystals!

This little museum, tucked onto the Fairgrounds, in Mariposa is definitely worth the turn off of 140 onto 49 to visit. The museum is run by the state parks, but really it is supported by a loyal group of gem and mineral enthusiasts. They have an amazing display of minerals and crystals and some of the most amazing gold specimens you will ever see, specifically the Fricot Nugget. Additionally, they have one of the rarest gems and the California state gemstone, Benitoite, which is only found in California, Japan and Arkansas. In addition to the great collection, they have a mine tunnel to see what underground gold miners worked in and a room dedicated to mining history and Gold Rush tools. A little tricky to find once you turn onto the Fairgrounds, it is behind the gates to the Fairgrounds which are usually open, but worth the hunt because behind the doors of this little building is some of the most amazing mineral and crystal specimens you will ever see and you don't have to travel to the Smithsonian! Only $4 to enter!

My husband and I were so pleased we stopped here. He was doing research on the California Gold Rush and this little museum had a wealth of information. Staff was friendly and very helpful. I highly recommend a visit to this little gem.

We relaxed in the shade trees by the babbling brook tasting delicious wine with our picnic. Our dogs had a fun time too. We laughed and reminiced and met new family members too. Bob the wine maker is a celebrity, he is so friendly knowledgeable and full of stories.

We feature 12 rotating draught beers, and a long ever-changing selection of California wine from small producers. One of our favorite places in Mariposa. Great beer selection (and hard apple cider). Very friendly and welcoming, patio in back. Would like to attend one of their music events and probably will in the future. Also recommend the pretzel with cheese sauce.

Mariposa Visitor Center is Run by the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce. We have The Official Yosemite Visitor Guide, Official Park Maps including Hiking Maps & Books as well as up to date information on Camping, Road Conditions, and Trail Closures. We are located at the corner of HWY 140 & 49 North only 45 Minutes from the Entrance of Yosemite National Park. Stop here first our staff will go over all of the information you need so that way you don't miss out on anything. This can also save you time since you don't have to go to the Yosemite Visitor center first and then try to find your way backwards to trailheads and viewpoints you may have already passed. We also have postcards & many fabulous books about yosemite and can help you with finding a place to stay or eat. We like to help optimize your experience. Come in and say Hello.
