Ruka

Reviewed By GallowaysOnTour2912 - Seaford, United Kingdom

We visited Ruka AGAIN!!! 3rd year in a row over Christmas. We travelled with our 2 teenage boys and younger daughters. Ruka, has something for everyone, hence why we have returned 3 years in a row. This trip was for 2 weeks, we sampled most of the activities and we hired a people carrier and ventured out to Lammintupa, which is a MUST!!! Fantastic value where reindeer rides and husky rides cost you €15 & €25, plus snowmobile rides for the kids and there is also a restaurant onsite that is great! Overall, Ruka is a fantastic place to visit.

Pallas-Yllastunturi National Park

The scenery in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is dominated by fells surrounded by forests and mires in their natural state. Because the area’s nature is clean and beautiful and the terrain varying, the park is a wonderful place to hike, ski and enjoy the outdoors. The silhouette of the fells can be seen practically at all times and the marked trails lead visitors to the National Park’s most beautiful look-out spots. The picturesque beauty of the Pallastunturi Fells has made the area one of the Finnish national landscapes.

If you want to see some raw Finnish fell nature, I warmly recommend to hike the Hetta-Pallas path (approximately 50-55 kilometres). Just remember there is a lot of uphill and some challenging paths, so it doesn't suit for you if you have any mobility restrictions.

We did a 3-hour snowmobile tour in the evening from 20-23h and it was great fun. The night was too cloudy to see northern lights but we knew this beforehand and it was still a great experience. We drove into the snowy forest and stopped by at a cottage to warm up, drink juice and eat some corn (or sausages for those who want). Going in the night is quite magical and there was no one else around as I think in the day time the area is also used for husky and reindeer trails. Snowmobiling was easy to learn and my mother could sit behind me as she didn't want to drive herself. We were picked up and dropped off from our guesthouse in the city so transport was very easy.

Saana

This recognizable fell is located in the village of Kilpisjarvi. You can climb to the top of the fell (1029m) along a trail which starts at the Kilpisjarvi tourist centre. Scrambling up to the top of Saana is a challenge worth doing. The longest set of stairs in Finland helps you at the steepest part of the four kilometer journey. From the top of the Saana you can see for miles!

Reviewed By MKJokela - Lohja, Finland

The trail begins from a parking slot of Malla naturalpark. The trail was in very good condition for about the first couple of kilometers. From there the rest of the route was a gently sloping rocky "path". The "path" was marked with black sticks but basically you could walk where ever on the top of Saana. This phase of the climb seemed to be never ending but the hike was totally worth the scenery at the top of Saana.
