Virovitica voli vlakove

Reviewed By periandro - Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

That fascinating and original museum lies by the Virovitica railway station. The view of the items exhibited there is a unique one, what makes the visit to that place really exciting. In it one can see, among other things, a great deal of faithful miniatures of real trains, trains having really functioned for some time since the nineteenth century. The precision made locomotives and carriages which can be observed in that museum are masterpieces of elaborate detail. There are fantastic reproductions in that museum, among others that of the train Paris – Athens “Simplon Orient Express”, the first train in Austria, the first one existing at a world level, the Yugoslavia Express, the Eurostat, and the train in which Marshall Tito used to make his journeys for official visits to other European statesmen. Moreover, there one can observe miniature reproductions of the old bus from the Yugoslavian movie “Who sings thinks no evil” (Tko pjeva slo ne misli), the “Casino Royal” (Casino Loyal), the Pejačević Palace as it looked in the 19th century; likewise a sample of the medical equipment which must have been in all train stations in Yugoslavia, a Diorama of a train crash, and a lot of other exciting objects. That museum is a perfect place for any train lover and the visit thereof is one of the best ways for anyone to get acquainted with the evolution of the train design and engineering throughout History. There the possibility to enjoy watching the different reproductions and the other items is quite guaranteed. I visited that place on September 5th 2019 and I really had a great moment there. Besides, I learned a lot thanks to the accurate and clear explanations of the guide Goran Denac, a kind and affable gentleman who makes all possible endeavours in order that one's visit is as pleasant and enjoyable as possible while illustrative. In addition to that, if one manages to prove that he is skilled in train driving he will be awarded a Diploma. By and large therefore, it's an extremely interesting and unique place, also from a historical point of view, which shouldn't be missed while in Virovitica or in the neighbouring area.

Castle Odescalchi-Museum of Ilok

The Odescalchi Castle is the central building situated in the medieval town of Ilok, housing Museum of the Town of Ilok. The Odescalchi Castle is an impressive building built on the foundations of the castle of King Nikola Ilocki from the 15th century. Nikola's medieval castle with the entire Ilok estate, which at the time occupied the greater part of Srijem, were given by Emperor Leopold to Pope Innocent XI Odescalchi and his family as a reward for their help in liberating Ilok from the Turks. The Pope's nephews, aristocrats from Italy, expanded the castle and changed its style. The castle was eventually rebuilt in the Baroque-Classicist style. They developed at the time very modern wine cellars beneath the castle and gave impetus to the growth of viticulture and wine production. After 1945, the Odescalchi left their Ilok estate, and their descendants remain a part of the Italian nobility, living near Rome.
