Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum

The WAAAM Air & Auto Museum has one of the largest collections of still-flying antique aeroplanes and still-driving antique automobiles in the country. The items on display at this museum are not only full of history, they're full of LIFE! Enjoy over three-and-a-half acres of indoor exhibit space.

I first heard of WAAAM years ago, shortly after they opened. At first I thought "An antique airplane and car museum in Hood River? How good could that be?" I have come to rue those thoughts. If only I had visited much sooner. If you like antique planes, this is a must see, bucket list item. The number and variety of antique aircraft is simply astonishing. And the fact that the planes are maintained in flying condition - well, that is just fantastic. I am not a pilot, but I do like vintage aircraft. I love to see all the details that make up a craft that can take to the air, in the relatively simple form of old airplanes. You can see all the working bits in some of these planes. Take a look at the 1910 Curtis Pusher, where you CAN see everything. If you also like vintage cars, those are here in abundance as well. Would you like to learn how to drive old cars? WAAAM has you covered there as well. I have taken the Model T driving course, and will be back for another one. Seriously, I cannot say enough good things about WAAAM, it is simply wonderful.

Not just a carousel, a small museum, a very nice gift shop and an amazing basement workshop where they carve the animals. Its all done with volunteer help. You can visit the basement for free and talk with the workers there. We had a wonderful time there.

Erickson Aircraft Collection

:60 minutes north of Bend, a stunning collection of (primarily) 1940-1950's military and civilian aircraft. I do not recommend looking at their webpage, just because it takes away from the awe and joy of walking into this collection and being bowled over! All the aircraft are maintained in flying condition. I (65yrs) spent several hours walking around. Good information available to read with each plane. In 2019, I plan to go back for their big annual air show. I'm just going to share one picture to entice you into visiting!

We visited actually with four adult family members right after the re-opening from the Covid-19 closure. (Protocols were all in place) During two different visits in the same week we experienced a nice visit with both Cliff and Melissa. The museum has a lot of interesting evidence in both the gift shop and the actual museum. I especially enjoyed the video and audio exhibits and all of the casts. There were so many foot and hand casts from all over. The merchandise in the gift shop included something for everyone and is some of the best I've seen. Prices very reasonable as well.

This place was the highlight for my kids' spring break trip to Portland. We saw a dog hero movie, toured the submarine, and saw all the exhibits except the planetarium. We arrived before they opened, but they let us wait in line inside, which was nice. We ate lunch at the restaurant, which had a good variety for kids and adults. The kids probably could have spent all day here.

Portland Art Museum

One of the oldest art museums on the west coast with an impressive collection of Native American and Asian art, plus a large modern and contemporary wing. Rotating special exhibitions bring the best of the art world to Portland.

Admission is free on the first Thursday of each month, so I try to go. The museum is more densely populated when admission is free, which is an interesting change from the sparse midweek crowds I might generally encounter here. This is a beautiful and modern museum packed with permanent collection art and interesting traveling exhibits.
