Everything about this cruise was fine except that we never got to or even close to Bai Tu Long Bay. Early the 2nd day, still in Ha Long Bay (I was tracking this on Google Maps), the propeller apparently fell off our boat and we spent most of the day anchored, awaiting repair. The scheduled activities--kayaking, beach time, beach BBQ, etc., --continued unabated, and repairs were effected on the night of the second day. The third day's activities continued as scheduled, all in Ha Long Bay, nothing ever in Bai Tu Long Bay. Few apologies were offered, and, given the worsening economic situation in Vietnam, we did not complain. The sales pitch was all about Bai Tu Long, how uncrowded it is, etc., but we never saw it.

The Hoa Binh Hill tribes are located in the Northwest of Vietnam, 75km from Hanoi. Hoa Binh Province is home to six minority groups, including the Hmong, Muong, Dao and Thai. The area changed drastically after the largest hydro power plant in Southeast Asia was built, turning the Da River into a lake. Still, today the province boasts some of Vietnam most beautiful scenery and typical Muong culture. This tour to visit the Muong minority group will give you the opportunity to explore, learn, and truly experience rural life in Vietnam.

Cycling is a great way to experience Vietnam. First and foremost because the travel pace adapts to one's own desire and likewise, the experiences seem stronger from the saddle on a 2-wheeler than the passenger seat in a car. On this 16-day tour, we have put together a varied program that combines the major sights with local attractions and rural surroundings. You will thus get spicy sightseeing of Vietnam's recent history of cycling in the cities, and you will become part of the street crowd on your cycling journey around the planned attractions.

We chose Mr Linh's based on our friends' recommendation. The replies from the agent were prompt, and it was easy to make changes or ask questions. Our itinerary was fairly straight forward, and you can check all the accommodations as they provide an itinerary with links to hotels and homestays. Both our guide and driver were excellent. At all times we felt safe when Mr Long was behind the wheel. Mr Son was very knowledgeable about the area, and he also picked up quickly our favourite dishes and our average hiking/trekking speed. We did a 9D/8N trip, and had to do small changes along the way (like skipping motorbike riding as it was a rainy day going from Ha Giang to Dong Van, and then staying one extra night in Dong Van waiting for the rain to stop). The changes were not an issue to Mr Son. We had a small misunderstanding, but even that was duly noted and communicated to us. We went to places where there were no other tourists, and it was really wonderful to enjoy the fresh air, amazing sceneries, colourful tribes and see people at their daily chores. Our itinerary was Hanoi-Hoang Su Phi-Ban Phung-Ha Giang-Dong Van-Cao Bang/Quang Uyen-Ban Gioc Falls-Quang Uyen-Hanoi. To see the rice fields in full colour, I would suggest going latest early October. Around mid-October a lot of the rice had already been harvested, but still plenty being harvested by the locals, mostly women. I would strongly recommend Mr Linh's for travels to Northern Vietnam.
