10 Sightseeing Tours in Bolzano That You Shouldn't Miss

September 9, 2021 Franklyn Hardiman

The capital of Italy’s northernmost region of South Tyrol, Bolzano (Bozen in German) has only been Italian since World War I, and its character remains distinctly Germanic. At the center of the town, Piazza Walther is named for a 13th-century German minstrel. The town’s most famous resident, Ötzi the Iceman, dates from about 3300 BC and now rests at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. The striking new building for Museion, the city’s modern and contemporary art museum, opened in 2008.

There are a few summits that have come to symbolise the word “mountain”. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo would certainly top an imaginary hit list of these. Many people have seen the Tre Cime in illustrations hundreds of times and think that they know them, but the moment you see them "in nature" is a moment not to be forgotten. This proposal is circular and unforgettable hike around the Three Peaks of Lavaredo. Back in the afternoon on the famous and panoramic "Great Dolomites Road".

The best guided tour I have ever been on was at the Normandy beaches. The tour cost us $550. divided among three of us. This tour of the Dolomites seems to be of equal quality. Good and better than good. BUT is it worth the price mentioned? Only those willing to pay your exhorbitant prices will be able to take the tour...which I would like to do as my father was born in Falcade in the midst of that area. The tour guide may be the nicest most informed person on the face of the earth, but the The Great Dolomites Road tour is way too expensive!

There are thousands of tour guides throughout Italy, yet there are only a select few who take the time to find opportunities to make each day’s experience unique and authentic — one that will stay you with for a long time. For those wanting the abridged version - I will tell you that Matteo is an excellent guide, his English is great, he knows the area, his price point is excellent and he is reliable. He gives more than promises and he can create the experience you want. Your experience will be one for the books so book him!! The unabridged version - My friend and I were doing our annual Christmas market tour (which we always plan on our own) and this year, we decided on the Sud Tirol area. Once we arrived and were able to get more specific information on the various towns and markets, and on the public transportation available, we decided to look into day excursions and we found Matteo at Concierge Dolomites. What a find! We booked one day that would take us to Innsbruck, Bressanone and Vipiteno. And we also discussed a trip that would take us to a few smaller markets and a drop off at our next stop in St. Ulrich in the Dolomites. We were picked up at our hotel at the appointed time and after picking up another pit of guests, our comfortable Mercedes Van was ready to go. 2 Americans (me with spotty Italian) and 5 Italians - (no English) from Florence, Milano and Sicily) -and Matteo. We were off to a perfect day! The drive up to Innsbruck was beautiful and Matteo kept a lively discussion going with translation when needed. After a few hours in Innsbruck, we reconvened and Matteo asked the group if we wanted to eat at the markets or we could go to a farmers house - real farm to table for a lovely lunch. Of course everyone said lunch at the farmer’s house and we set out on another beautiful drive through the mountains, the vistas were incredible and to say the lunch was nothing sort of spectacular would be an understatement! The charcuterie, cheeses, wines, breads, were all sourced from the farmer! Each dish would have made Anthony Bourdain swoon - yes, swoon! Throughout the lunch the conversation between this small group of strangers transformed us into a group a friends - we shared photos of our own food creations, families and travel experiences. And after that amazing experience, Matteo outdid himself, with an amazing opportunity to see the Krampus parade. And a stop in Bressanone. The next day Matteo put together a day tour that included the smaller markets we wanted to see and a drop off in St. Ulrich along with a few surprises that just make the day! He invited the group we had spent the day with an several joined in, making the trip less expensive and more fun. First stop, up into the mountains and snow, a stop at Lago di Carezza where although the markets had not yet opened, was truely magical - like the inspiration for the set of Frozen. We parked and walked through this tunnel only to find...a snow globe! Framed by craggy mountain tops sliding into a snow sea of ice crystals, the likes of which I have never seen (and I am skier, so I have seen lots of snow), with iced over trees and nativity scene. That was just the beginning, he took us to the most magnificent lookouts (took my best photos of the day). Had we taken public transportation, we never would stopped there. From there two more small town markets featuring the handmade items of locals only, and finally our drop off in St. Ulrich, just in time for the evening festivities to kick off. The door to door service, saved a lot of hassle and the company could not have been better. Best of all, Matteo told us about the summer bike trips he can coordinate though the mountains, on a flat path, next to the river, from town to town, we’re in! An amazing two days of everything that makes travel so special - Matteo is well travelled himself - been in the industry for years and know what people want and how to deliver. He was also great at being there, and letting you discover on your own too. Great job Matteo and thanks!

We had a fabulous day touring the Dolomites and seeing the beauty of the region. Alessandro was a wonderful guide and obviously loves the area he works in. The snow mobile was a highlight as was the lovely lunch we had. But overall it was the beauty of the region. Thanks for a great Christmas experience.

Martina was one of the best guides we’ve ever met. She is very knowledgeable and fun. We learned a lot about the history of Bolzano & Tyrol, the wine of the region & the people. We visited two quaint wine bars and tasted 4 wines. We experienced white, red and sparkling wine. We walked around the city center and she pointed out historical monuments. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed Martina so much.
