Hallstrom Farmstead

Swedish immigrant and horticulturist, Axel Hallstrom, moved from Minnesota to Florida in 1904 for a warmer climate for his sickly wife, and land to grow tropical trees and fruits. He later purchased 100 acres on the "golden ridge," the tropical sand dune that runs along the western side of the Indian River. First he grew pineapples, then citrus fruit. By 1918 his brick three-story home was completed and stands today on five acres of property, bequeathed to the Indian River County Historical Society in 1999 when Axel's only daughter, Ruth, passed away. This beautiful home is filled with the original furnishings and archives from the Hallstrom family. It is open Monday through Friday and the last Saturday of the month from 1-4 pm. Many Swedish holidays are celebrated here including St. Lucia Christmas, Fika Pause, and Axel Name Day. A donation of $5 a person is suggested to help maintain the house and gardens.

Schacht Groves

We loved going to this orange grove. We have always drove by the groves here in Florida when visiting and thought we’d stop and check this one out. So glad we did. Beautiful grove! We couldn’t go out in the grove because they were working the grove but we had a nice visit with owners and staff. Very friendly. Answered all our questions. Would do again on next trip.

I spent about half a day shopping on Ocean Drive in Vero Beach. There were some very nice boutiques and the area is right across from the boardwalk and water. There was plenty of parking spaces in front of the stores and the merchants were extremely pleasant.

Wabasso Beach Park

Reviewed By AuntyAnnie20 - Sebastian, United States

Beautiful and quiet place to visit the beach. Fair amount of sand, semi-private (*this could change when the season changes but hasn't ever been very crowded when I have gone, which is always when the sun is on it's way down from tippy top so we don't burn), and great waves. Clean, nice group of people every time I go there. I just moved to the area and have been almost 10 times in all with my 2 young kids who love playing in the surf. Plenty of people come to watch the waves or read, small groups of nice kids, older people and those exercising...nice eclectic mix. I've gotten some amazing photos of the sunset each time we've been there that are out of this world (see attachments). No dogs and no smoking which is nice! Amazing wheelchair accessibility from parking in the lot directly above the beach, to the nice long ramp which isn't too steep, all the way down in a z formation onto the sand. Outside shower station & semi-clean public restrooms (separate male & female). Nice pavilion area to picnic or throw a bday party. And most definitely OPEN! Lifeguard on duty every day until somewhere between 4 & 5. Lots of surfing going on as well which is fun to watch. Overall wonderful place to go. Small surf shop and pizza place in the front of main parking lot add a nice touch if you get hungry or need a supply you forgot to bring with you on your trip. Area is also regularly patrolled by the Sheriff's department which is nice and makes this single momma feel very safe. Enjoy!

17th Street Bridge

Reviewed By magm324 - Vero Beach, United States

This bridge is so handy when I go to the stores, gas station, and Poinsettia Grove. It is wonderful for crossing over the river to Orchid Island to go to South Beach, or anywhere else on the Barrier Island.
