Iglesia de la Virgen Peregrina

Reviewed By 227ianc - London, United Kingdom

Built in 1778, its location is such that it is externally one of the most impressive churches in Pontevedra, facing onto the Pza da Peregrina. A stopping point for pilgrims who were having their documents stamped here, the church plan is in the shape of a scallop shell and the shells are incorporated into much of the decoration. Otherwise, compared to some of the other churches, the decoration is quite restrained, with your eyes drawn upwards into the dome, and thence to heaven.

Castro's Fortress

In 1665, the Castro Fortress was constructed to protect the city from continuous attacks by the British Navy. During that time, the Castro, the San Sebastian Fortress and the city wall were a strong defensive system of the city. This defensive system was not very much effective because it couldn't stop hostile interventions. At present, the fortress has become a famous tourist attraction because of beautiful gardens, open spaces and superb views.

There are a lot of steps if you visit this spectacular fort directly from the town. The lower part of the climb is supported by some ascending escalators. The view from the top is worth the climb. The fort is very historic with its gun mountings and its ambiance of quiet and beauty, which belies its massive military presence over the anchorages and town. In addition the very old settlement dating from 3AD is also worth a view, but it may not be open when you get there. It is clearly visible from the road.

Tui Cathedral

This cathedral is well worth a food visit and unlike other monuments where you pay an entrance fee and simply get granted access, here you get a hand set with recordings to do your own self guided tour. Interesting mix of styles from different eras it was built over. Enjoyed it very much.

Fortaleza de Monterreal

Reviewed By helenlA6465JR

We could see the Fortress from our restaurant on the seafront of Baiona and thought we would walk over to have a look at it. It is only €1 to get into the fortress which is excellent value as we spent the next couple of hours looking around it. It was a beautiful walk in the evening sun walking up steps, along ramparts, and enjoying the stunning views over the marina and the ocean. Well worth a visit.

Los Horreos de Combarro

Reviewed By trilete - Spokane, United States

Los Horreos are simply the refrigerators of the past. They were used (and sometimes still are!) for storing semi-perishables like potatoes, grains, meats, etc... They are up on stilts and have protective bases to keep vermin out. Some have been refurbished with a more modern look but many appear just like they would have 500 years ago.
