Chongoni Rock-Art Area

Reviewed By occhiolist - Hong Kong, China

A lot of Malawi's sites are related to nature or the missionary/colonial era; Chongoni is an excellent opportunity to understand local culture. Having a guide is invaluable as they can explain the context of the images and how they relate to the practice of Gule Wamkulu, which still takes place today. If this interests you it's definitely worth trying to arrange to see a performance while you're in the area (ask your guide or get directions to Mpalale village, although they will need some warning to prepare) and making time to visit the Chamare Museum in Mua. There are various panels to see and some involve a fairly steep hike uphill, but I am very unfit and I managed it fine.
