Richmond Catholic Parish

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

St Ignatius Church is an awe-inspiring building, one of the largest churches in Victoria outside of the Melbourne CBD. Due to Richmond's relative poverty in days gone by, it took many years to complete St Ignatius. The church is built in Gothic Revival style. The main building material is bluestone, the material favored by 19C institutional architects. St Ignatius is in Church St, Richmond's highest point. The stained glass is magnificent. The church is named for St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits. The Jesuits built their churches for the ages.

Box Hill Town Hall

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

The Box Hill Town Hall dates from 1935, when this splendid town hall was the centre of a proud lower middle class suburb, hardly an Asian restaurant in sight. In these thriving older suburbs, an admirable town hall was a matter of civic pride. The Box Hill Town Hall is built in neo Grec style, a neo-Classical Revival style, which accounts to the magfiicent columns out front. The Town Hall, which is classified by the National Trust, is a great venue for community events, which draw people frrom all over Melbourne. Art lovers will find the Artspace Gallery interesting, with its collection of early Australian Impressionist paintings.

Labassa

From mansion to apartments, Labassa has survived with its Victorian era decoration intact. Labassa is an outstanding Victorian era mansion with opulent architectural features. Originally called ‘Sylliott Hill’, it was renamed ‘Ontario’ in the 1880s reflecting its new owner Alexander William Robertson’s Canadian heritage. Robertson was a founder of the Cobb and Co. coach company that successfully ran mail services throughout Victoria. Renamed Labassa in 1904 it was home to Melbourne’s elite until 1920 when it was divided into flats. The residents included Hollywood’s first Australian silent film star and other colourful bohemians. Labassa is the most lavish of the few surviving nineteenth century mansions. Open every third Sunday of the month.

Reviewed By 3boyz - Melbourne, Australia

Labassa is secreted away at the end of Manor Grove and dominates the landscape as you walk up the street. It's imposing facade is striking with pink marble offsetting the grey construction. Colourful tessellated tiles take you through to the entrance and you are immediately whisked away to another time. For the most part the property is in fair to good condition, although there is a long way to go for it to be restored to it's former glory. The property went through a number of ownership changes, and then was converted into 10 flats, which is still evident and forms part of the history of the mansion. We were lucky enough to also tour the tower, which could be a challenge for those with mobility issues. The rooms are quite grand and you can imagine the wealth that was required to build such a residence.

I seriously don't bother going to Phillip Island anymore the fairy penguins are right here! It can depend on the night as to how many there are but we have been lucky on most occasions that we have been. There is also a great view of the city from the pier, a great photo opportunity beckons.
