10 Sights & Landmarks in El Carme That You Shouldn't Miss

August 18, 2021 Yuk Petri

You’ll find plenty of orange trees here, but the fruit known as the "Valencia orange" was actually developed in California. Travelers interested in local food should focus on paella instead. While the city contains many monuments, Valencia’s modern crown jewel is the City of Arts and Sciences, a futuristic complex of museums, cinemas, theaters, and more.

It's one of the largest medieval quarters in Europe so you find lots of stunning architecture. It's the perfect place to stroll around and also has lots of great eating options.

Casa-Museo Benllliure

Reviewed By breezy1435 - Saratoga Springs, United States

Constant Companion loves the decorative arts so this family home in the wonderful Carmen district of Valencia was on her "to do" list. It was a bit of a challenge finding it due to the small winding streets, the lack of signage, and our unfamiliarity with the area! But it was worth it!! The home contains works by Jose Bennlliure Ortiz, his son Peppino and sculptor brother Mariano, and art by others such as Joaquin Sorolla. The gardens in the rear feature some interesting tiles and are very relaxing. The highlight for me was the artist's studio in the rear of the garden. So glad we made the effort to visit!

Torres de Serranos

Large guard towers that used to protect the ancient city.

Reviewed By navat2014 - Maryland, United States

Torres de Serranos was once the gateway to the north and Barcelona and is situated in the trendy area of Barrio del Carmen in the north east of the old town. One of the two remnants of the ancient walled city of Valencia (the other being Torres de Quart.) Part of the walls fortifications, surrounding and protecting the city from intruders. Built between 1392-1398, it served as a prison for the wealthy nobles and knights from 1586-1887. The tower have stood alone since the walls and other gates were demolished at the end of the 19th century to make way for the city’s rapid expansion. I recommend climbing the 132 stairs to the top for beautiful panoramic views of Valencia.

Torres de Quart

Fifteenth century towers named a national monument.

Reviewed By Thebates22 - Chester, United Kingdom

Beautiful historical structure in the city of Valencia. The €2 (£1:70/$2:25) entry fee to reach the top of the structure is a steal and well worth it to see the surrounding views. Highly recommended place to visit.
