Longwood Gardens

In 1906, industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, PA, to save a collection of historic trees from being sold for lumber. Today, Longwood Gardens is one of the world’s great horticultural displays, encompassing 1,077 acres of dazzling gardens, woodlands, meadows, fountains, 10,010-pipe Aeolian organ and 4.5-acre conservatory. Longwood continues the mission set forth by Mr. du Pont to inspire people through excellence in garden design, horticulture, education and the performing arts, through programming that includes exhibitions, musical performances by leading artists, renowned horticulture education programs, horticulture research, environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Though May is somewhat of an in-between time, Longwood never disappoints. The indoor conservatory is always "in bloom"with different plants and flowers every season. The fountains are fun to watch...the gift shop is lovely (though a bit expensive)...and the restaurants are always good - mushroom soup to die for.

ChesLen Preserve

The 1,263-acre ChesLen Preserve is the largest privately owned nature preserve open to the public in Chester County. Miles of marked hiking trails lead visitors through shady woodlands, flower-filled meadows, fields of corn and soybeans, and stream valleys. Visitors can also explore Ollie Owl’s NaturePlayGround, where young explorers can climb logs, build stick tee-pees, hunt for bugs, explore small streams, and get a little dirty, tired, and inspired. Free play is encouraged and is a great way for kids to gain an appreciation for nature. ChesLen is one of many preserves owned and cared for by non-profit conservation organization Natural Lands. As the Greater Philadelphia region’s oldest and largest land conservation organization, Natural Lands has preserved more than 125,000 acres, including 43 nature preserves totaling more than 23,000 acres. Some 2.5 million people live within five miles of land under the organization’s protection. Land for life, nature for all. natlands.org.

Visited today to explore. Beautiful, wide open, park with miles of trails. A lot of the trail we saw was through farmland but there are some wooded ones. Trails are very well maintained. We saw a few people but for for 90% of our hike we were alone. So a great place to get away from it all or socially distant. This is an amazing free park, great for kids and families, great for hikers and all nature lovers. As of 3/26/21 Restrooms and buildings were not open when we were there. And the park is closed on Thursday. . There’s a shopping center with a Walmart and fast food places about 4 miles away, so there are amenities not too terribly far away. It’s very near Longwwod Gardens, so if you’re visiting the area it offers a different kind of more natural outdoor experience as something else to add to the itinerary. It’s part of a group of other parks called Natural Lands, some of which are pretty near to Cheslen.

Rhoneymeade Arboretum & Sculpture Garden

Reviewed By egm46 - Silver Spring, United States

The tree walk is amazing. The 25 trees, some of them over 150 years old, are clearly labeled. With the identifying guide in hand, we walked through the grass, around the old farm house, next to farmers' fields while looking out at the surrounding mountains. The setting is so peaceful. There are benches placed throughout the walk. There are sculptures placed along the walk and an art exhibit inside the small building. The volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable. On the day we were there, we were able to talk with the landscaper/ horticulturalist who has worked creating this beautiful arboretum for over 20 years. The road to the arboretum is small. It looks more like a private lane, but when you drive past a farmhouse and barn and around the bend, you will see a yellow sign, "bike rest stop." Turn left into their grassy parking lot. The volunteer will be in the small wooden building, the studio. There is no fee, but the organization appreciates donations. Rhoneymead is open on Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., April through October. When I go back, I will spend more time under the huge chestnut tree. It's the first one on the walk.

This is a great park, I wish we lived closer. Two lakes with walking trails around each (0.9 miles and 1.5 miles). Very clean! Paths are bricked with a few different types of brick. Running on these may be a bit tough due to the uneveness. You would have to pay attention to your footing.

Get out and go shopping at Peddlers Village. Lots of shops and eateries, easy free parking and lots of people without the riff-raff. Peddlers Village is fun to just stroll and people watch even if you don’t feel like shopping. Big Thumbs up for this attraction.
