Lovely location!

Spent one night here with my husband and daughter. The cottage was lovely, clean, modern, and well equipped if you wanted to cook your own meals. It is located on a nice beach that you can walk along in either direction. We enjoyed watching the sunrise over the ocean and looking at all the stars at night. Also enjoyed having morning coffee on the porch with the ocean view. Check in was contactless due to Covid so we did not meet the owners or staff. It was a bit pricey bit we knew that when we booked.

The location of this property at the end of a peninsula ensures lots of beautiful views of the river and the barrier islands beyond it. We reserved a carpet-free room in the hotel for an overnight stay. It was a nice room with a comfortable bed. It even came with a continental breakfast served in a sunny room overlooking the river. I would highly recommend reserving a cottage for several nights to really appreciate this establishment. They are cozy and have pretty well everything you need for an enjoyable and relaxing stay. This would be a dream location for a conference!

Horror

We are very disappointed, appalled and angry. We booked for 2 days but we left after a few hours. We were driving our car in the morning into the parking lot of the ranch, which looked bad maintained, and the owner came at us, and was asking what we were doing. We said, Hi we are staying at your ranch! He said, you are WAAAY to early for checking in. We knew that and we said sorry which we did not have to and we were not expecting to check in only do some hiking in the Area already. He did not welcome us in any way and hè was only irritated that we were early so we left to go somewhere Else to Hike. When we came back at 6pm to check in a woman gave us the lock (because the Doors cant be locked with a key) without saying anything About how it works, and was very distant and did not welcome us. After we went into the room (where there was a very weird smell) we found the source: it was a dead mouse in the toilet which we saw has been in there for quite a while so we asked the lady if she maybe could clean it up (since flushing it was not gonna do anything Good) and maybe give us another room because of the smell. She only said that the owner will be back in 10 minutes so she could not do anything. We went to eat in Clear water and when we came back the mouse was gone. We then asked the owner if we could maybe have another room but hè had no rooms that were ready. We then asked if we could pet some animals or see them because it was a ranch and since we were not welcomed or treated nicely at all we wanted to see and maybe pet some animals. I asked if I could pet their horses, I am a veterinary student so i know a lot About the animals, but I could not get even near the horses because they were 100.000 dollars and thoroughbreds. I said that I know these kind of horses and I also work with them, but still I could not go near them nor pet them because I could give them diseases(???) These horses were btw staying in an very wet muddy land and an old shed. He said I could pet the horses of the neighbours which according to him were only “2.500” dollars so I could. He laughed at me and said that its not a zoo, and you cant pet animals in a zoo…. He was very disrespectful and unfriendly to us and we were so super excited to come to his ranch because we Stayed at other wonderful ranches before and we were so disappointed how hè treated us. We then decided that we did not feel very Good and we wanted to maybe leave so we wanted to tell him that, hè only said: oké, leave the key in the door. And he closed the door in our face. Not even asking what was wrong or of hè could do anything, or talking to us or even a refund? There was no conversation possible with this man and hè treated us with zero respect. The ambience was very distant and very cold, nothing you would expect from a local ranch. This is not the way you treat people. Very bad maintained and dirty. We went to another hotel that night.

We are located in the world’s only inland temperate rainforest, a vast hideaway of ancient mountains, old-growth trees, and fast-flowing rivers. We offer some of the most exciting and natural bear-viewing, nature and wilderness holidays in north America, against a backdrop of some of western Canada’s most dramatic terrain.

A wonderful experience where Kristin and Julius lead by example. The result? - very highly qualified staff who are knowledgeable, patient and good humoured. Every one of them! - accommodation which reflects the thoughtfulness of the owners, in its style, setting and small touches - each day full to the brim with appropriate, differentiated activity where accommodation is not just about where you sleep. It's about accommodating everyone's abilities and interest. - take a bow Kim and Kristin, the food was as plentiful, enticing and as fresh as the surroundings The list is endless. For me, personally I appreciated the understanding of everyone at Wild Bear Lodge that this is a significant commitment for those visiting. Everyone on the property is friendly, and Jenna is very welcoming. If you're looking to disconnect and relax, we would highly recommend Kayanara. We are looking forward to returning next year.

Fun Times at Free Rein

Reviewed By MUS0630

My wife and I came up from Victoria, BC to experience the ranch life style and horse back riding. We were immediately impressed with the beauty of the property and log buildings (owners house, the guest lodge and two small log cabins) and the beauty and healthy-look of the horses (after the first day, we knew why the horses were so healthy-looking, more later). The ranch is owned and run by Debbie, who is very friendly and worldly, and a great cook. Finlay, her dad with his dog Vinnie, are there to assist around the lodge and ranch. A very experienced Wrangler, Mika, runs the day-to-day activities with the horses. A finely tuned team at work with everybody knowing their duties and responsibilities. On the first day, two (out of over 15) horses were chosen for us by Debbie and Mika for their anticipated compatibility with our character and riding skills. I was a beginner and my wife had done some riding in the past. We were introduced to some basic horsemanship such as grooming, walking, putting the halter on, saddling, basic commands (this was my my first time exposed to horses). In the afternoon we went for the first trail ride through lodgepole pine and aspen forests. After the ride, there was more grooming and feeding. The horse's special grain diet is like a fancy recipe for gourmet muffins. After that, there is plenty of hay for the horses. No wonder they look so good and shiny. For the next 3 days, we went on two rides per day of increasing difficulty with the "trotting" excursion on the last day. We couldn't have asked for anything more as Mika was such a patient and encouraging and knowledgeable guide. The food was great and very satisfying. Debbie makes delicious salads and all else was very tasty. We stayed in the lake-front cabin which was very cozy and warm. Amazing how quiet and dark it gets away from the city. Our peace was only disrupted by shooting stars and the odd duck taking off from the lake. There was plenty to do in our spare time. We biked on surprisingly good mountain bikes, went canoeing in the lake (never saw the Beaver family coming our of their lodge) and played ping-pong in the games room in the guest lodge. The games room is very well equipped (darts, billiards, Fussball, card and board games, library in the lodge). Wifi and cell coverage was spotty in our cabin, but plenty good in the lodge. I enjoyed my time at the ranch and really liked getting close to "my" horse Boo, such a gentle soul. The atmosphere is very friendly and open, Finlay is really funny and full of stories (I hope for his sake that Leeds United stays up in the EPL this year). Debbie is a good soul, being concerned about the sustainability of the land surrounding her ranch. Mika is very enthusiastic about her horses and willingly shares her experience and knowledge, while praising our progress on the horse. Overall, this was such a positive and fun experience on so many different levels and we would definitely come back and also recommend the ranch to others.

Driving into this resort you can immediately see the PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP. And once you are greeted by staff this just adds to the whole experience that you will enjoy. Reasonable rates for a variety of accommodations and amenities which will keep everyone happy and busy. for your stay. A lovely location with a small beach and boat launch area on the Oxtongue Lake Narrows. This resort offers you comparable rates which a dismal and run-down place across the water is charging and has nothing to offer.
