Mokau Museum and Gallery

The Mokau Museum and Art Gallery highlights the rich and varied history of the region surrounding the museum as well as showcasing artists from the Waikato and Taranaki region.

This museum has a great collection of old newspapers, various household (and beyond) items (from electric dog collars to washing machines) and also displays some of the Maori history. We had an enjoyable time scanning the vast collection of newspapers (all of them available to open and read) and looking over - and reminiscing for some of us - the old household items on display. There is a nice relaxed feel to the museum and it is definitely worth the time to stop and explore.

Hawera Water Tower

The climb to the top can be made a bit more fun if playing the Harry Potter theme music. The view from the top is great plus you may get to see nesting pigeons on your way up too.

Three Sisters And The Elephant Rock

An awesome way to spend a few hours. We just happened to be passing and pulled off the road to take a look. Our timing was perfect with the tide fully out enabling an easy walk across the black sand right around the headland and the view just kept getting better. Don't drive past this one!

Stratford Clock Tower

Reviewed By 563lizziel - Wellington, New Zealand

what an unexpected pleasure. The tower has a true glockenspiel in it. It is a clock, with bells that tells a story. Three of four times a day the windows open and the story of Romeo and Juliet is related to all who stop to listen. Not exactly what we were expecting after the glockenspiel in Innesbrook, Austria but an absolute pleasure. Thanks to the people at the heritage village who advised up to pop back up the road, have lunch and wait for the one o'clock performance.
