Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

Sassi di Matera is a beautiful place, you have the impression you step in another world, an ancient one. Impressive churches, history all around, stunning views from each corner, splendid both by day but especially by night. Lots of restaurants to eat, lots of narrow streets where to get lost and enjoy the silence and the charm of the old city. You can admire it also from Gravina, if you pass on the other side of the canyon.

Qui potrai trovare molti articoli handmade, pietre e cristalli per cristalloterapia, gioielli in argento, bigiotteria di alta qualità e realizzata a mano (anche da me stessa), oggetti vintage e tanto altro. Ho cominciato con la “semplice” vendita, dopodiché la creazione di gioielli artigianali è diventata una delle mie passioni. Argento, rame, pietre naturali, pietra locale (calcarenite), ottone, legno e alluminio, sono solo alcuni dei miei materiali preferiti. Adesso ho un mio banco di lavoro e mi piace molto anche il lato progettistici di un gioiello (in shop siamo aperti alle domande di realizzazione di ogni tipo).

This church is incredible and full of history. Santa Lucia alle Malve is a rupestrian church in Matera, an ancient monastery that welcomed Benedictine-order nuns between the 8th and 16th centuries. Inside Santa Lucia alle Malve – located near Sasso Caveoso – you can still see many mural paintings, mostly from the 13th century, with a wide range of holy representations including the Nursing Madonna, Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Gregory, Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica. I highly recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes to visit this church.

Dating back to the 12th century, St. Peter's is built over a cave complex that served as a repository for the dead. There are fascinating frescoes from the 15th century upon entering the church, representing several saints and the Annunciation. Open daily to visitors, but hours are much longer in the Summer than the Winter months. A token entrance fee is required; reduced fees apply to certain groups. A walking tour of the Sassi is probably the most efficient way to visit.

Sitting at a small plateau, shared with the piazza of the same name, this medieval church is of a basic Romanic style. It has a number of original frescoes in reasonable condition, and the pained ceiling is clearly of note.

I recommend this place 5 stars. If you want to learn the history behind the beautiful city of Matera, then this is a must see. Available in English speaking headphones. It takes you back to the first page of Materas history. This place made me fall in love with the city. note: very interesting video, to be seen before visiting the stones

This 11th century church was carved out of the tufa limestone characteristic of the area. It consists of several adjoining caves, shaped into a Romanesque basilica, with three parallel aisle. The vaulted ceilings and the three cuppolas exemplify the architectural complexity of this rupestrian church. It is thought to have been run by Benedictine monks in the early days, but was later abandoned. Restored in the 17th century, it again underwent major restorative work in 1967. Several faded frescoes represent the crucifixion of Christ, surrounded by the Virgin Mary and St. John Evangelist. Madonna delle Virtu was overshadowed by the church of San Nicola del Greci, built on top of it. San Nicola has a number of well-preserved frescoes that are of exceptional quality. GUided tours are available daily.
