Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the country’s third largest urban area.

Mahara, The Unique Sculpture Park and Pottery

Reviewed By music657 - Auckland Central, New Zealand

A walk around the 10 acre sculpture garden and pottery is a wonderful experience. Heather’s creativity abounds in the bush walks where you encounter crafted sculptures, then you emerge in an open space at a labyrinth and proceed through the food forest garden to encounter the bamboo forest path walk down to the stream. The final area is a magical stone circle. A Not to Be Missed experience/ then go to Rapaura Watergardens Up the road.

Cardboard Cathedral

Reviewed By 258JulieC - Melbourne, Australia

This Cathedral is just amazing, it is a temporary building whilst the original Cathedral is under massive reconstruction which will take many more years. Following the devastating Christchurch Earthquake on 22/2/11 the Cardboard Cathedral was built. It is a delightful place and carries many stories, truly very moving and serene. We took a 20 minute guided tour which was a wonderful way to get to understand the building meaning. I believe this building will become a 'forever' Cathedral in Christchurch as it is truly unique and has so much spiritual meaning. Well worth a visit.

Orion Powerhouse Gallery

For such a small town, Akaroa has a wealth of attractions and the Powerhouse Gallery is one. Hidden down a side street it is run by volunteers & open nearly every day with ever changing exhibitions. The current Yin & Yang exhibition contrasts very different works by local artists.

Ngaio Marsh House

Reviewed By ladypennz

I visited while attending the Christchurch Writers Festival this weekend gone. The house is as it was when she lived there and is so worth a visit. Seated in the Cashmere Hills it has lovely views. The house itself and its furnishings are lovely, but the spirit of Dame Ngaio Marsh makes it so much more than just a nice house. On the day we visited we had the additional treat of meeting an actress who had been directed by Dame Ngaio Marsh in a production of Hamlet. Also enjoyed the bookcase full of various editions of the novels written by Dame Ngaio Marsh. I thoroughly recommend this place to visit.
