Now known for opulent resorts, luxurious spas, dramatic golf courses, historic former cattle farms and breathtaking nature reserves, Kamuela is a largely unspoiled gem. Mauna Kea Resort Golf Course is the top choice for going green. Other relaxing activities include checking into Spa Without Walls and Mauna Lani Spa, or stretching out on Hapuna Beach. What a stunning and gorgeous place. The lookout at the end of the road has parking, restrooms and beautiful views. Descend the nearly 1 mile paved road down to the valley floor, at an average 25% grade, and you'll be even more rewarded. Ferrin the end of the paved path to the beach is another quarter mile on gravel. Wear good shoes and take plenty of water. The beach, river, and valley at the bottom are gorgeous. Hike back up at your own pace. Took us 35 minutes of grinding each way.

Mauna Kea Resort Golf Course

Considered one of Hawaii's most unique challenges, this highly-rated 18-hole championship golf course offers dramatic elevation changes and spectacular views; under renovation until December 2008

Looking for a little more challenging golf course? You got it here! Played 36 holes, teeing off at 8am. Nice sunny day, little breeze, humid. The course has lots of changing elevation, lots of undulation in the fairway and greens, well maintained course, the greens are very nice and true, not like some course greens in the area that are so super slow. Stay in the fairways or have challenging next shot from the bermuda grass rough. They have multiple tees for every player. With a 12.5 index, I played the Resort tees, which was totally appropriate. Only issue I saw was the bunkers. Some were wet, some were fluffy, some were crusty like they haven't moved the sand in a while. Don't they have that machine to sift or clean the sand or rake periodically? The carts are in great shape, decent GPS but you will still need to take slope into consideration. There are two spectacular ocean view holes that are a "Kodak moment." Hole 3 and 11 are simply beautiful so get the camera ready. Otherwise, there was a lot of hills I played the first round in about 4 hours paired up with another group and about 3 hrs. playing solo the second round so good pace of play. It was hot and humid so drink a lot of water or appropriate drinks. The practice facilities are in great shape. The range is good but short as I see many range balls adjacent to hole #1. The practice putting area is in good shape. Don't remember if there was a place to practice sand or chipping. I notice you don't need much time to warm up with this humidity and heat! The check in was routine. Chona helped me check in and was nice and efficient. The cart gal was super nice, bubbly and attentive and had a full assortment of beverages and eats. The attendants on course were helpful. I would expect the best as you are paying top dollar for this top venue on the Big Island, right? I did not use the restaurant. The have a terrific pro shop with nice apparel and golf products and sure to appeal to most any discriminating golfer! The parking was easy and convenient as I came in early but seems a little tight if you don't come early. As for value, I believe it is worth it and you may find some discounted fees on line or if you are staying on the Mauna Kea property. This course seems more challenging to me than Mauna Lani (which is still a first class course) and Hapuna, and will definitely test you. And, they do have many tee boxes so theoretically it will be a fair course for all levels of play.

Mahukona Beach Park

Reviewed By ColleenC974

My husband found this place while doing some research on this part of the island, as we hadn't been to this part before. Even though it's not your typical "beach" per se, this is 100% my new favorite snorkeling spot on the island! The water is crystal clear, and even if the surf is high, it is still is so calm here! There is a ladder to get in the water if you prefer that way, or you can jump right in. This is probably the first place I actually saw schools of fish (big enough that you can spot them from above the water), which was really cool. In addition, the history of the place just adds to the experience. In addition, it is a great place to whale watch (one of the days we were there, we saw about five or six breaches), dolphins, and we were even entertained by what we think is the local barracuda hopping through the water after a bunch of smaller fish. So happy we found this place!
