The red cliffs at Heidmork Nature Reserve are amazing! The colors of the volcanic remains are just beautiful. Be careful of the horse droppings though, because they are everywhere due to the horse rental tours down the road. A great place to stop and take a hike though without driving too far out of Reykjavik. No charge to enter

My wife and I had a great day in Þrýhnjúkagígur. I'm sharing a few pictures from our day but keep in mind a picture won't say anything compared to a standing your self at the bottom of an emty volcano. The location is close to Reykjavik city and you can get lucky with a perfect weather or more likely a rainy and foggy day. And there are some really heavy rainydays there. To be dry you have to wear a solid waterproof jacket and pants. It is best if you also have rain boots. Our day was wet and windy but with the great guide we really enjoyed doing the hike. After a 3km hike we did relax in a camp with a coffee and a soup before we were slacked down in to the volcano for an amazing moment in a totally silent area. The trip is not cheap but it is well worth the money.

If you have the vehicle to take you there, this a trip that cannot be missed! Possible day trip from Reykjavik. However, you will need a good 4x4 vehicle, preferably with a snorkel as you will be traversing ca 10 rivers of varying sizes and depths along this Icelandic F-road to get to Thorsmork. However, with the right vehicle, the driving tour is half the fun of going there! And when you arrive in Thorsmork, 30 km after having turned off the main road at Seljandefoss, what a location you have come to: A most beautiful valley situated rundt under the Eyafelljokular (the volcano that popped in 2009 that halted all European air traffic for a month), and in the bottom, Myrdalsjokulen which is much larger and hides the enormous Katla volcano that is 60 years overdue for its next eruption. Great vantage point for hiking. We stayed at the Basar camping site which is as far as you can drive in Thorsmork.

Laugardalur is a wonderful park in the center of Reykjavík. It has lots of colourful flowers and plants and trees. Lots of ducks stay in the small lake. There are also remains of old Reykjavík there, where the women took the dirty laundry to clean them - which is where Laugardalur got its name from, Laugar comes from Þvottalaugar which means laundromat.

A short ferry ride from downtown Reykjavik but find another world on Videy. Easy trails, terrific views of Reykjavik and beaches and ocean too. Definitely worth the time but if you do not have a car, the bus lines do not run to the ferry dock in the winter. We walked from the closest bus stop (about 15 minutes) and were glad we did. The John Lennon Peace Memorial is also there - we went back at night to see it lit (separate review).

Winter time ! Absolutely. Adam with adventure Vikings was our guide , very nice and patient gentleman that made us feel safe and comfortable during the tour . The Leidarendi cave which translates as “the end of the journey” is not lit with artificial lighting but adventure Vikings provide crampons, helmet and head lamp . Cave has a lot of snow in the entrance so we have to slide in on our bum and crawl out which made the adventure more interesting. He took time for us to take pictures of icicle explain the different colors of lava , and how it is formed. There are areas we have to bend down a bit , uneven terrain but even with a bad knee I made it ok. We exit the same way we entered due to the other exit is filled with snow . Great experience! One of the best cave I’ve ever entered if you want adventure in the land of Fire and ice Myglobalquest.com
