10 Museums in Zanzibar Archipelago That You Shouldn't Miss

August 12, 2021 Franklyn Hardiman

A group of islands and islets some 25 miles off the Tanzanian coast, the Zanzibar Archipelago is headlined by Unguja (often referred to simply as Zanzibar) and Pemba. Once a separate nation, Zanzibar has a long history of trade with the Arab world, dating back to at least the 11th century. The capital, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many interesting historic attractions. Zanzibar's bright white beaches and nearby coral reefs make it very popular with the sun and sea set.

Yawara Gallery is a very unique selection of the finest Tinga-Tinga paintings. It is a very special collection of exceptionally talented artists from Tanzania, who are all unique story tellers conveying their life experiences, wisdom and vision through the Tinga-Tinga traditions and style. It’s hard to find similar quality work elsewhere, so you better not miss the opportunity when you’re in Zanzibar. Support these supremely talented artists by purchasing their beautiful works. Beside the Art Gallery, Yawara provides an excellent pressure point Japanese massage. All masseurs are highly qualified and certified through the reputable Japanese Shiatsu school. Very effective traditional Japanese massage, I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommending to everyone who seeks muscles stain relief. Exceptionally good!

The Beautiful Eyes

We start more than three year ago, a fine art photo gallery in the centre of Stone Town in the former tourist shop of Zakia. The idea to initiate The Beautiful Eyes as a place to present art photography started in May 2008 when three photographers visited Zanzibar for a week of photography. They missed a place to talk, present and even to buy photography. In September 2008 Hans Agterdenbos, one of the three, came back to stone town and started investigations to open a gallery. He met Zakia Abdullah they married in march 2009 and they founded The Beautiful Eyes place to talk about photography, find inspiration and maybe good ideas. Up to the present time ±4500 visitors found the way into there gallery. Some take an original photograph home, others attend one of the workshops the Photowalk© the Shambawalk© the Pembasafari. Most caught some inspiration and all of them left the gallery with a good feeling and positive words

Hurumzi Henna Art Gallery

The women of Hurumzi Henna Art Gallery transform traditional henna body arts into paintings and prints . Using a centuries old tradition of adorning women's hands and feet for celebrations such as weddings and festivals, the artists translate the patterns of the body art onto canvas creating a new and soon to be iconic art style through their elaborate paintings.

An incredible history of the island. From the era of the Omani occupation, through the occupation by the Portuguese and then the British, upto the post-WW2 period. Fascinating history about an Omani princess and her relationship with a European high ranking personality, presumably an Austrian. Well worth a visit to view an amazing collection of paintings, artwork, photos and furniture. Advisable to visit with a guide or read up on it beforehand.
