Boom Gallery

Boom Gallery is a vibrant contemporary Art Gallery located in Rutland St Newtown, Geelong in the former RSS Woolen Mill. Within the gallery are dedicated exhibition spaces, a design gallery, art stockroom and stand alone café. The aim of the gallery is to exhibit the highest standard of contemporary art and design in a space that is dynamic and exciting. We aim to actively engage people with the arts practice of artists, designers and makers from our region and across Australia. The gallery houses a café that creates a meeting place for visitors and locals, including the creative community of Rutland St.

Located in one of the most aesthetic streets in the city, Boom Gallery is one of my favourite places to visit for both coffee and to experience fantastic art. Boom has two separate galleries on the same street that both feature regularly changing exhibitions from both local and international artists. I love the fact that I can come in for a coffee and every fortnight or so there are entirely new exhibitions to view. I've discovered some of my favourite artists thanks to Boom and their support for emerging talent. Across the road is also Boom Makers, a creative hub that is home to jewelry makers, picture framers, leather workers and map makers all creating incredible handmade items that are sure to grab your attention. The cafe at Boom is also top notch, they do great coffee and fantastic food for both breakfast and lunch. Overall, Boom Gallery is a part of Geelong that I am genuinely most proud of. You really get a sense of the culture of this city both past and present when you walk through the large industrial doors. Highly recommend.

National Wool Museum

Here the story of wool is brought to life - told by those who lived it and through the sights and the sounds of heritage machines weaving carpets and knitting socks. Here the smell of lanolin fills the air, fresh fleece beckons your touch and the authentic surrounds of the shearing shed immerse you in the Australian wool story. The National Wool Museum experience is more than just wool. Here history, science, fashion, handcraft and art come together. Here temporary exhibitions and programs combine learning, exploration and entertainment. Here you can find the finest woollens, learn a traditional craft, explore our region's heritage and maybe even come fate-to-face with creatures from our past. Today the National Wool Museum is one of Australia's cultural treasures - as a cultural heritage destination for visitors and community.

This wasn't high on my to-do list in Geelong but it turned out to be a really interesting museum with some hands on exhibits - try your hand at grading wool or work the sock knitting machine. The carpet loom is fascinating though I'm still in the dark about how it works. There was also an international wildlife photography exhibition which was amazing. My 10 year old and I spent about 2 hours here. Highly recommend.

Amazing aboriginal cultural experience by Anthony and the cafe owner who made traditional delicious lemon myrtle scones for our morning tea- fantastic experience to take our overseas guests. They learnt about tools, culture, land, stories, listened to the didgeridoo, learnt how to throw a boomerang and met and fed native animals - emus, kangaroo and wallabies. Super interactive, very accommodating and so friendly. Loved it and nightly recommendation it to everyone.
