TLDR; this is a tremendous experience for the adventurous traveler; if you have an open mindset about meeting new people, enjoy hiking and the outdoors, and don't mind an occasionally rough ride, this is an incredible trip and well worth your time. Having never traveled outside the US, I wanted to go big on my first solo trip with the 62-day excursion from Pretoria to Nairobi. Since it was such an extensive trip, I was looking for the most value for my time, based on price, activities, and safety. I backpack often, so beyond basic comfort was not a priority for me, which turned out to be a good mindset to adopt since we camped nearly the entire trip, & rode in a truck with no AC (Namibia gets hot!). Tip - be ready to retrieve the rain fly for your tent during unexpected 3 AM rain showers! However, nearly all of the sites we stayed at had the option to upgrade from camping to comfortable indoor accommodations, which was a nice option to take advantage of occasionally. Once we reached our site for the night, we began our daily rotating duties, which included helping to cook, clean the truck, and do dishes, which I think added to the experience and helped bond our fellow tourists. Traveling solo, I felt safe at all times with our guides, drivers, and locations. My trip was split between two guides, Crispen, then Pete, and they were great company that looked out for us and kept us safe and informed about everything around us. Our guides were familiar with the paths and knew everyone at our destinations. Nothing surprised them. Our drivers were impressive as well, with Harmony and Francis keeping us safe on the often-tumultuous African roads. Navigating both urban and off-road environments in our trucks was no easy task, and Francis even proved his mechanic skills during the occasional break-down. The variety of locations we stayed at were simply incredible. From Cape Town to the deserts of Namibia, the Okavango Delta to Zanzibar Island, the mixture of urban and remote landscapes couldn't have been better. We saw every animal you can imagine. On a trip like this, an open mindset is key. Traveling for two months with strangers can go any number of ways, but due to this trip, I now have lifelong friends scattered across the globe that I can't wait to visit. This wasn't just a vacation, it was a lasting, eye-opening experience that I believe everyone should try if possible. I can't recommend this trip enough. I wish I could go back to January and do it all over again.

We customised a 6-day safari with Kevin at Natural Life Experience, and enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime natural life experience. The Serengeti wilderness truly is wilderness right now, with almost no tourists. We experienced the thrill and adrenalin of finding and spending quality time with every single species we encountered, all to ourselves! Thanks to Kevin's intricate knowledge of the western corridor, Namiri Plains Seronera and Ndutu areas, we enjoyed 25 encounters with 65 individuals of 6 different cat species. We spent two days and nights immersed in the Wildebeest migration at Lahia Lodge in the western corridor (Kevin's recommendation, which also yielded what is probably now the rarest primate in Tanzania: Patas Monkey) - how magical to wake in the night to a soundtrack of Wildebeest, hyenas and lions. Kevin and I went birding in the early mornings and found all but one of the regional endemic species I was hoping to see, plus several other big surprises. It was easy to form a safe bubble with Kevin, in his superbly equipped Landcruiser, with full air-con for areas where tsetse were a bit too intense, huge (removable) windows for photography (which Kevin kept immaculately clean throughout, without us even asking), and enouch space the four of us could have remained socially-distanced the whole time were we so inclined!). We had an incredibly rich, rewarding, and relaxing time, sundowners where we chose, taking it at our own pace with Kevin indulging our every whim. We have enjoyed quite a few safaris now; each has been amazing, but none more so than this one. If you can, be sure to visit Serengeti now, it may never be wilderness in the same way again.

7. Tanzania Cultural Excursions

Enjoy Kili

Home to approximately 120 tribal groups, most of these comprise small communities that are gradually being assimilated into the larger population due to changes in land use and the economic draw of city life. Pastoralists who fiercely guard their culture and traditions, Masaai tribal life revolves around protecting and caring for their herds of cattle and finding ample grazing land in their region. The 'Spice Islands' of the Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba, Mafia, and the entire Tanzanian coast is home to the Swahili people, a vibrant mix of Arab, Indian and Bantu origins who historically based their livelihoods around Indian Ocean trade. The Swahili Coast, as the region is called, is a predominantly Islamic region with old mosques and coral palaces found throughout the area. Swahili culture centres around the dhow, a wooden sailing boat powered by the seasonal wind.

We did the cross country tour with longway and it was an amazing adventure! Abu and his wife Ann are local Tanzanians who own the company and they have great insight on the happenings within the country. The cross country tour is awesome as you get off the tourist trail and see parts of Tanzania that are untouched and incredibly beautiful. We visited the lake Chala, the usambara mountains and Sadaani national park along the coast. All the locations were unique and not touristy at all! We loved this trip and working with longway was a treat! Thanks Abu and Ann for a memorable adventure!
