The Yucatan capital has both colonial and Mayan treasures to discover. Nearby ruins at Uxmal give some insight into the lives of the predecessors of the conquistadores, who arrived in 1542. Ek 'Balam is located in the central-eastern part of Yucatan, about 190 km from Mérida and it is easy to reach the area, since the access is clearly signposted. The name of the ancient city, in the Yucatec Mayan language, literally translates into Spanish as "dark or black jaguar" (Barrera V. 1980: 1950) although the people of the Ek'Balam region who speak Mayan also interpret it as " Lucero-Jaguar. " When the Spanish arrived in the Yucatan Peninsula in 1517, Chichén Itzá was already abandoned, which means that while Europe lived in the Middle Ages, Chichen Itza had already created an even more precise calendar than the Gregorian one, its knowledge of Astronomy was much more advanced and they handled the concept of the number zero. Chichén Itzá differed from other Mayan cities by introducing the cult to the god Kukulcán, the feathered serpent.

My sister and I took a bird-watching tour with Eco Colors guide Jose Paz. It was a highlight of our trip to the Riviera Maya. Jose took us to two different areas and we saw more than 30 different species. He was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable about all the birds. He recognized them by their songs and could spot them even in the dense trees and shrubs. In the second preserve, he had also arranged a lovely lunch for us, cooked by a delightful woman over a wood fire. Jose's driver joined us and he was also a very likable fellow. It was a great experience and I highly recommend!

10/10 I would do this trip again. My advice would be to go for the 4 hour tour over the 2 hour version because it goes by very quickly. Everyone is unbelievably kind and you taken care of the entire time. If you are looking for a snorkeling trip where you don't have to plan anything, this is the one for you.
