10 Mountains in Tenerife That You Shouldn't Miss

February 4, 2022 Osvaldo Hartline

Tribal Terenife still shows influence from the aboriginal Gaunches people. Visitors clamber to conquer Mount Teide (Spain’s tallest peak) and to stretch out on the sands of Los Gigantes. Squawk hello to the playful parrots of Loro Park, or brave the petrifying drive to beautiful Masca Valley. For a true taste of Terenife, sample fresh farmhouse cheese and local bananas. A piece of delicate calado canario lace makes a special souvenir.

Guajara

Reviewed By nordlysMH - Stromstad, Sweden

The car park near the Alto De Guajara trailhead just before the Teide car park easily gets crowded especially when the "safari" Landrovers of some island operators stop there by the dozen by mid-morning. It is a great relief that their customers are not going to follow you on the trail, but rush to the restaurant and the toilets (these incidentally charge you one euro for a visit). The trail first runs on the flat, but soon you will have to work your way up a good series of switchbacks. While you gain altitude turn around to look at the Teide just across the road and the mountain range on the left. The relative tough bit is when you walk towards the left just next to a towering cliff where rocks may fall down towards you at any time (A sign warns you about the risk). Good as the view might be from there, it is not advisable to stop for too long and good to listen to any sound of rolling rocks coming your way. The time to take a longer pause to enjoy the gorgeous view is once you are past this treacherous part of the trail. From there you will soon discover the other side of the mountains and the summit you are aiming at is just minutes away. The trail is also more gentle from that point on. Take all you time to admire the 360° view even if by the time you get there the ocean is bringing up a thick and billowing carpet of clouds down below. Walking down from the summit, do not miss the trail that leads you back and around the other way of the mountain. The first piece might appear counterintuitive to you as you possibly expected to take a sharper turn to the left much earlier to get around the mountain. But that comes later. Trail markings are good and clear. Once you are all the way down again through the dense vegetation you get to a dirt track which is not so appealing but will get you easily back to the car park, offering yet more views of Teide and the lavafields extending from the foot of it.

This area just shows the contrast of Tenerife so beautifully. As you drive across the island it moves from being barren to lush and green. The views are wonderful. Well worth a trip.

Montana Chayofita

Reviewed By TatjaK4 - Kuopio, Finland

The climb up is quite steep but since the mountain is not that high, the hike was quite easy. Amazing views from the top to both Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas! The overall trip from the bottom to the top and back does not take that long (About an hour I would say, depending on how long you stay to look at the views) so it is a nice activity. Definitely worth the visit while in Los Cristianos/PDLA!

From los Cristianos bus stop to summit is 7 miles in total. Follow route from photo in review. I jogged it in the hottest part of the day and found it tough. Walking it should be fine for most people. Carry some water and take your time. Some nice views of the surrounding area.

Strange volcanic rock formations and spectacular scenery distinguish this park, which surrounds Mount Teide, an active volcano and the highest peak in Spain.

Montana Roja

Reviewed By kcharleton - New York City, United States

Climbing Montana Roja was fun. It was easy with a little bit of a challenge, as it was quite windy. Almost windy enough where you could lean forward and not fall. There's a beautiful view at the top. I wasn't initially going to climb this, but I'm glad I did because I caught the sunset. It can be a little slippery going down.
