The subway or underground lives up to its reputation as it is clean, and a piece of art with beautiful chandeliers, frescoes, large bronze statues, marble, etc. the trains run very frequently and as soon as one leaves, there seems to be another one in a matter of minutes. They do have English speaking people to help you get tickets as well as English vending machines. And the fares are very reasonable as this is the most frequent use of transportation for the locals.

We upgraded to grand class for our trip from Moscow to St Petersburg on the overnight train, which has en-suite facilities. We boarded at 2230 and shown to our cabin, which was small with pull out beds, but very charming. A steward came and took our breakfast order for the next morning (eggs benedict, tea, apple strudel, and fruit). The train left exactly on time at 2340. It was very exciting travelling at night in a sleeper, but too excited to get much sleep. Breakfast arrived in our cabin at precisely 0730 as we had requested, and the train arrived in St Petersburg an hour later - bang on time. The journey takes about 9 hours, the overnight train goes a lot slower than day time trains, to give you chance to get a decent sleep. But who needs it. Superb experience.

I was amazed of the St Petersburg metro trains - cheap tickets, magnificent structures like you are entering museum, very clean surroundings, safe and enjoyable ride. Commuters are kind and reserved. Love to commute using their trains.

I used to travel to Nizhniy in the past by night trains. It was cumbersome, you leave late from Moscow and arrive at the dawn in Nizhniy without getting much time to sleep. This time I took the Strizh train. The travel time is around 4 hours. Very convenient. The cars were manufactured in Spain, they are narrow-bodied. but the speed is higher than in Lastochka wide-bodied train. In Strizh you get two by two seating. Between each pair of seats there is a power outlet. In each car there is a water cooler. I brought my own cup and tea bags, so I did make for myself a number of cups of tea. And I was charging my smartphone during the ride.
