August 7, 2022 Karren Gelb

Home to the Netherlands’ oldest university and the birthplace of Rembrandt, Leiden also served as a several-year stop-off between England and the New World for America’s Pilgrim fathers in the early 17th century. Today, lovely Leiden boasts the second-largest Dutch city center after Amsterdam. The National Museum of Antiquities has an impressive collection of Egyptian artifacts. The Hortus Botanicus, established in 1590, was the site of the planting of Holland’s first tulip bulbs in 1593.

Not bothered about customer experience

Reviewed By SvO75

We had to cancel our visit to the Netherlands because we couldn't fly out due to Covid restrictions. We contacted this b&b asking if perhaps they could change the date of our booking to a date in future, the answer was very 'computer says no'. I understand they're a small business, so the pandemic must be terrible for them. I wasn't expecting everything for nothing, but just a friendly response to my email would have been a start! Other establishments we had booked (a fabulous place in Gouda called Goudse Watertoren) were amazing, they showed understanding and empathy. And on top of that suggested we could come another time without charge. That really helped us when we were so upset about not being able to come. The holiday cottage we booked has also accepted a new booking without extra charge. There are some fantastic places to stay in Leiden, (last time we stayed in Huys van Leyden, which was lovely) so I suggest staying there instead of this place. I assume that if they're unable to manage a decent reply to a customer in distress, they're unlikely to manage to accommodate an enjoyable stay.

Hot rooms, long waits for breakfast

Reviewed By SquonkyMan

Room too hot, airconditioning insufficient. Room was at highway side of hotel, hence opening window not an option due to noise. These rooms should really not be given to any customers. Breakfast very long queus for getting into breakfast area, and once in further long queus for getting coffee, bacon, eggs, ... Really poor experience not worthy of a Hilton hotel. Excuses at reception area also really didn't make sense: if issues with hot rooms known, why then giving us a hot room at the highway side? And how can a hotel be surprised about too many guests turning up for breakfast? Really poor logistics!

nice hotel but let down by incorrect billing

Reviewed By david g

stayed for 4 nights in May. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Room was good. Lovely waterfront setting and the restaurant/brasserie were both busy which was a good sign. Food was good quality. You are a 45 minute walk from the town centre and train station but we did that happily a couple of times. Leiden is a nice town and there is always a bus or taxi. All great until time to pay the bill. A la carte menu was good and gave a cheaper deal for 3 courses from a reduced selection. The bill didn't reflect the cheaper deal (everything was priced individually). When challenged the bill was amended but when we checked out, the wrong bills were included even though the correct signed bills were alongside. Not just us. Woman next to us was having same problem. Put a dampener on it. Another dampener is that we still have pending payments against my card a week after we left and settled our bill in full. These should have been cleared when we settled our bill.

Great boutique hotel

Great, small hotel close to the town centre and right on a canal. We were so glad we went to this town rather than Amsterdam, it's much quieter but with tons of canals. It's a university town so lots of young people and more bicycles per person than anywhere I've ever been! We visited the tulip garden, Keukenhof (?), which shouldn't be missed. The tulip season ends about the 2nd weekend of May. Also visited Amsterdam where the canal boat trips are very worthwhile. And the art museum, Reichtsmuseum (?). Walking around Leiden is also great on a sunny day. Dining at the hotel is recommended.

We we were also quite close to Keukenhof, Bollenstreek and seaside. And eventually it was perfect time for flowers blooming. We'll be pleased to come back for another stay.

Nice room, great location

Reviewed By imgwiz

Room lovely, bed comfortable, liked extra space with the couch as a seating option. Liked the big windows and brightness of the space during the day. Bathroom big, good for putting up a line to dry washed clothes! Room really quiet and peaceful from the street, and that was during kings day celebrations, and it was vey lively in the streets outside. Great location for visiting Leiden. Coffee maker in room, it a frig would have been nice as well. Nice storage area for clothes etc, but it was really dark in that corner with no lights there. Also some of the lamps/ bedside lighting not working. Breakfast option was unclear; we were told at check in just to,show up if we wanted it, then we’re told in morning they were “ booked up” and we had to go find it outside. Not a huge problem….. but then the next day we said we would be there and the breakfast room was locked while we and the delivery person waited for someone to come. When she did arrive it was all fine, busy traffic issue. So really the issue is that they did not have a staff person on the premises. That would have made various small issues easier to resolve. May be a staff shortage issue that places are still dealing with….

Amazing location, tiny room

Reviewed By teddysmum82

The room is the smallest I've stayed in in a city break, no cupboard just a small clothes rack, no dressing table for toiletries, very small shelf in the bathroom, all of which made it difficult for the room to be comfortable to spend time in. We stayed for 3 nights and it cost us just under €600 so very very expensive for such a small room. 1 Parking isn't included and is an extra €16 a day. Breakfast is an extra €15 pp, if these things were included in the price it wouldn't have felt like such a rip off. That being said the location was amazing, we took our dog and they left a blanket out for him which was nice, the beds were very comfy and the shower was amazing. Like others have said if someone in another room uses the shower it is so so noisy in your room and there is a bar/restaurant right outside so take ear plugs. Leiden was amazing and I would 100% go again but with the price paid for this hotel I don't think its a fair price and because of that I wouldn't stay here again, I'm sure there are more fairly priced hotels close to the centre.

Bad experience

Reviewed By F488BHsimones

Worse experience i/we have ever had at a hotel. Accepted my husbands cc , who stayed at this hotel for 30 something days and he was never asked in the middle of his stay to show his cc again… even though he made an additional booking during his stay for a few days longer. I was visiting Leiden when he was leaving because our daughter started studying there. So when i came my husband mailed with the hotel to make a reservation for me , the hotel accepted his cc again with no remarks what so ever. And my husband had told them in the mail that he was leaving and i was going to stay at the hotel. They had already been payed for his longstay , had his approval of his card for my stay and they had everything they needed to claim the money at the end of my stay. But 4 days after he left they asked me for the cc ( mind you they never asked my husband for his cc during his stay!!). But my husband is an EU citizen ( white) and i am not a european ( brown/coloured person) . The bottomline is that they don’t trust people who are non-european/coloured. Even though they did trust my caucasian EU husband !!! In the end i gave them my cc and i still had 14 more days to stay … they pulled of the complete amount of the upcoming stay IMMEDIATELY!!! I have never seen this before. Such a bunch of money-grabbers . I felt very DISCRIMINATED by an all-white( blond) distrusting staff . My husband informed the manager and received an even worse mail back , complaining about my behaviour instead of verifying what had happend leading up to my dissatisfaction. The manager believed his staffmembers blindly. I had never been treated so bad in my life at a hotel or for that matter anywhere.( and we travel alot !) They had everything they needed to claim their payment in the end!!! I moved out the next day and went to the Fletcher Wellness across the street and had the best treatment i could imagen . Payment in full at the end of my stay no asking for cc during stay. Never again Golden Tulip Leiden , WORSE HOTEL EVER!

Landgoed Kasteel Oud-Poelgeest

The best kept secret in between mayor cities of the Netherlands, minutes away from Leiden, near the Keukenhof and the Noordwijk beach. Five minutes after you have taken exit 6 of the A44, you find yourself in one of the most beautiful historical settings found in the Netherlands. Castle anno 1640 was the famous professor Boerhaave and now lies quietly beside the pond, surrounded by the estate of 10 acres full of trees with a forester's house and a chapel. In addition, the coach house in 1900 with the adjacent hotel, equipped with all comforts; a lovely terrace, bistro, sauna, bicycles ... and free parking and wifi. The Castle as well as everything the Estate Castle Oud-Poelgeest offers and lends for a surprising diversity of events. Did you know that your stay at the estate directly contributes to the preservation and restoration the Heritage? The hotel is situated behind the coach house.

Perfect base for Keukenhof & Flower Parade.

Reviewed By summafunmum

So happy that we chose this hotel! We came just overnight for the 2022 Flower Parade & Keukenhof, which is very handy to this location. But, now that we have been, we will recommend to our friends and come back, even just to eat in the fantastic restaurant. Bus 50 (a 5 min walk from the hotel to the bus stop) dropped us off directly at our viewing location for the Flower Parade, on the outskirts of Lisse. Keukenhof is 15min by car. The hotel is located in a lovely forest setting on the outskirts of Leiden. Our room was large with modern decor and super-comfy twin beds, pushed together. There is no air conditioning but, as it's only April, we opened the window for fresh air and were fine. But the hi-light of our stay was dinner at the hotel restaurant. The setting is classy; the room dimly lit, which I love. We chose the 'chef's surprise' 3-course option, with wine pairings. The meal was memorable, wines paired perfectly and we considered it to be a great value. I 100% recommend this hotel as the perfect base to explore the tulip region!
