Cuibul de la Mare

We are a traditional romanian guesthouse, simple people from the country side, but very hospitable, as the romanians are well known for. In our places, there’s an old saying: “at the moment when your having guests, do your best and a great joy will . We don’t have big hotels with goldish and expensive materials, but we have a summer guesthouse, our humble “nest”, and we take care of it, to be welcoming and warm for our guests

Extremely disappointed

We were scheduled to arrive at this place on a Friday. Since Friday is a working day, as soon as we got out of office we announced the host that we're on our way, with an expected arrival time around 8:30 PM. The traffic was hectic and around 8.30 we informed the host that we'll be late by one hour. At 21:32 I parked the car in front of the entrance gate and here it began. I called, I wrote on the host's whatsapp, nothing. At some point, a woman holding a child in her arm came by the gate, I said hello, she looked at me and walked away. I kept ringing and after 20 minutes someone finally appeared at the gate. Cosmin, the host, started asking me why we arrived so late, expressing how worried he was (although he didn't call or check my message saying we're running late). I should mention by this point that I made this a reservation in July for a week-end in September. One week before our planned visit, I informed the host that I got a puppy and I would like to bring him with me, taking into account the fact that this accommodation place is "pet friendly" (according to their booking.com description). Except for the fact they're not. So, I announced the host that since we've first made the reservation, we got a puppy and we would like to bring him along, he answered that usually, they don't allow pets, but they'll make an exception if we assume any destructions. The puppy is crate trained, so I said we're ok. Cosmin went on in our conversation and said that he'll offer us a gazebo, if we'll like it, although they were fully booked (our booked room was in the attic). I assured Cosmin we would be fine with any gazebo he'd give us. So, back at the gate, after trying to reach the host for 20 minutes and Cosmin sort of welcomes us into his place. On our way to the room (spoiler alert, was not a gazebo), we met his wife who offered me something which I'll classify as a highly disgusted look. Anyway, she was far from being nice. Now, the room. We had been switched from the attic room and the new one had an entrance from the main living area. The place was noisy and did not smell well. Now, I have spent a bunch of summers at my grandparents and I know how countryside places look and smell. I know the drill. This place was smelly. But this was not the problem. Cosmin, our host, insisted on repeating that we shouldn't let the puppy run around in the living area, because other people in house have kids and they judge us before judging him as a host. This entire time I was holding the puppy in my arms, he didn't make a sound being clearly scared about the whole thing. His remark made me understand that we are not welcomed there and after he showed us the room, I went outside to discuss about it. We had a very awkward conversation with him telling me in a very condescending voice that he had been waiting for me for hours (although I had informed him about when I left home and also about running late), that he had gone the extra mile for me, that he's an architect (who cares?!) and that I'm offending him when I am offering to pay for the disturbance created . Where disturbance = me arriving there, staying in front of the gate for 20 minutes and also appearing there with a puppy, although I did communicate with him about all these aspects. However, we left immediately with Cosmin after us telling us that he doesn't understand our reaction, constantly repeating how cool he was about everything and how crappy we were about everything. He told me he didn't understand why we're leaving, I tried to explain, he told me he didn't need my explanations. What a troubled person. Oh, I forgot to mention that he had been drinking for a while before we got there and was still drinking alcohol while discussing with us, a small detail which might explain his lack of coherence and manners. Cosmin, a small piece of advice from me: get your feet down on the ground and start getting your stuff together. Acting all drunk with your guests doesn't make for a good image for you and your business. Which is a business after all. For anyone interested in finding out more details or even for you Cosmin, if you have any troubles remembering what happened, I have some screen shots that can support my review. I usually don’t act like a forever irritated granny how keeps evidence of everything, but I found your overall behavior completely off track (yours and you wife’s who kept rolling her eyes in a desperate attempt to show how well raised she is). Also, since we’re here, you should update the information regarding what’s allowed and what’s not. Clearly, pets are not welcomed there. But kids who make a lot of noise and music in the background is. Why? Well, just because. Maybe I don’t enjoy hearing kids who scream and jump right besides my door and maybe I don’t like the music other guests are listening to. Still, I didn’t say anything about that, because this is what tolerance is about, common space. My and my 3 months old beagle were sort of a deal breaker in the whole story and even though Cosmin didn’t say in a specific sentence (I doubt he could anyway) that we are not welcomed with a dog there, he definitely made it crystal clear by acting unprofessional. I am so happy I got back home that night and everything sorted out just fine. Spending two nights in that place with those people would have been horror.

We chose the village of Corbu for the seclusion it offers. The place is two minutes drive away from the main road. It is well contained and with a general good feel about it. The room was spacious and clean and the host was attentive to the details of our stay. There is a small kitchen available for everyone's use and an interior terrace with a few tables. The village does not have local amenities, other than two small corner shops with little choice of food. Trips to either Navodari (10 minutes drive) or Mamaia (15 minutes drive) are necessary for restaurants or supermarkets. I am happy with our stay and plan to come back again.

Confortable stay

No problem on arriving late in the afternoon, the manager was really kind. The room was really clean (the bedlinen was a bit oldfashioned). There is a shared kitchenette space with utensils and dishware to use.

Lovely little place, friendly and helpful despite language barrier

Simple guesthouse with great enclosed courtyard away from cars to let kids run around safely. Also a lovely little play area for them down the back. Lodging were simple but comfortable. Friendly people, we managed to communicate through a mish-mash of languages and sign language! I would certainly recommend this place.

Casa Laura

To be avoided

Very small room and bathroom, sewage smell from the bathroom and no bathroom window. Dark colored towels, so as to not see if they are properly cleaned. The bed sheets...no words for them, check the attached pictures to get an idea. This is not something you use in a tourist accommodation, especially when you say that it could pass for a 3 star accommodation. We could have put all this aside if it wasn't for the terrible sleep we had due to the poor quality mattress and the over sized pillows that were extremely hard, keeping your neck suspended. It was impossible to use them so we used some of our folded clothes for pillows. Sufficient to say if woke up with aches everywhere after the 2 nights we stayed there. The hilarious thing is that the lady owner said those are memory foam pillows, as if we've never seen anything like that before. We are frequent travelers and this was definitely the worst sleep we got. We will never set foot there again, there are a few other decent locations to choose from in Corbu, but for us this was something like a last minute trip and we ended up in this place. I gave the same review on booking.com (and a score of 5) and the property had the nerve to send me an angry SMS (I still have it) saying that my evaluation is completely false and that I have an interest to say these things. I have no other interest but saying what I've seen and felt, I have no business in Corbu other than being a tourist, as it's my favorite seaside destination in Romania. They also said that for the price paid we won't get the same amenities somewhere else. Guess what: you can get that in Romania, but most probably in Corbu it's better to pay a little more to be able to have a pleasant stay. We are not looking for luxury, otherwise we would not go to Corbu which is a rustic village, but to Mamaia or somewhere else. I gave the same review on google and again I got the angry reply from the owner (I have proof on automatic email), a reply that some hours later was changed with a "milder" one, when perhaps they realized it is bad for business. In their original reply they said that the room size is 12 square meters (I can add that with indulgence it has 12 square meters with the bathroom included and this can also be proved with maths and by looking at the pictures). They also said that maybe we didn't have money for other type of accommodation which made me think that it's a very nice way to "appreciate" the rest of their customers, many of them giving them good reviews, but probably being "poor" like us since they couldn't afford a higher rate. Anyway, high or low, we haven't received any fiscal receipt for the cash payment. I'm sorry that Tripadvisor doesn't take reviews in Romanian (hopefully this will change soon), as I would have put here their texts word by word. One more thing: the high average overall score can be very misleading, this has happened to me also in Montenegro, where the property had an over 9 overall score, but the apartment we got was not renovated and not cleaned, with spider nests, dog hair and ants everywhere in the kitchen, plus a horrible old smell. So my advice for other travelers is to patiently read as many reviews as possible and to not discard the not so flattering ones (I wish I would have done this...).
