Playa 506 Beachfront Hostel

From the moment you enter our mini oasis, you will be immersed in exquisite nature. Paths wind in and out through lush jungle flora where dorms and rooms nestle in privacy. Best of all is the ever-present sound of the surf. The beach lies directly in front of our place and it is breathtaking. Our outdoor restaurant is casual and fun while offering a variety of elegant cuisine and the best collection of craft beers on the entire coast. It extends to tables under the palms and sand dancing under the stars. Playa 506 is one of the most spectacular values on the this side of the coast. Located in the serene little village of Cocles, it is only 2km walk or bike ride into the lively town of Puerto Viejo. We entertain a unique concept: backpackers boutique hotel. Our credo is this: We believe that true value is not necessarily one size fits all. Everyone should have the opportunity to create his or her unique experience from basic backpacker to 5-star amenities. Pura Vida at its finest!

Undesirable, mediocre and overpriced

Reviewed By Juan Pablo A

This hotel turned out to be pretty undesired. The fact that it was a little overpriced wasn't everything, we thought that would be compensated in service and and quality of the installation but instead we found the hot tub to be cold as well as the coffee and you could tell most of the staff was there as volunteers to have fun and no real interest in providing service. Most waiters greeted us with very unwelcoming attitudes

Kalunai Hostel

Puerto Viejo at its best

Reviewed By AlexandraB4656

I extended my stay at Kalunai hostel 2 times, so I ended up staying there for about a week. Giannis is an awesome guy, he is totally not like a typical hostel owner. He went to a waterfall and party with us. The open kitchen and place outside is totally chilly. I met so many great people there and some of them became friends. We had such a great time there and if I ever return back to Puerto Viejo, I definitely will stay at this place. I really recommend it and whenever you are there, tell Giannis I say hi!

Brigitte"s Ranch

The ranch is located directly on the beach, in the middle of a small jungle. Cahuita still retains direct, wild contact with nature. We offer various tours in jungle, mountains and the Caribbean Sea: didactic tours such as the chocolate tour, visit to our medicinal gardens, bird watching, nocturnal horseback riding in the moonlight, among others, make our services an unforgettable and complete experience for adventurers and families. We have an open dining room from 7 to 11am, for breakfast or brunch. In addition, in the sector of Playa Negra find restaurants, laundry, bike rental, surfboards, and the most fun place to dine and dance to Caribbean rhythm; the iconic Reggae Bar. In 10 minutes you can walk to the town or 20 minutes to the Cahuita National Park. During the journey it is possible to run into a sloth, or different kinds of monkeys, birds, mammals, crustaceans and insects. The nights are enlivened by incredible sounds and lights of the different types of fireflies.

Very special cabina experience

Reviewed By 1orangepopsicle

We were blown away by our cabina. It was a bit more than we budgeted for, but I can tell you it was beyond worth it. It was so magical, we had a hard time leaving it for the beach! The beach is an easy walk away. In front of our cabina were the grazing horses, and all around us was the jungle. Every day we'd sit on our large veranda/open deck and watch howler monkeys and toucans. At night fireflies lit up the field where the horses grazed. We asked to stay another night (4 total), and Brigette said that is a common request. Once people get there, they don't want to leave! We didn't go horseback riding, but we did do the chocolate/medicinal plants tour. Which was so cool! And you don't have to go anywhere for it, it's right on the property.

Management: Speak to your Reception!!

Reviewed By Dianamcnutt

Management: Please speak with Kellen at reception. There was an additional lock put on my locker. When I asked for it to be removed I had to wait until 1:20pm for the next person on shift. Kellen wouldn't open my locker and ignored me. The hostel was withholding my passport, and credit card illegally. I was checked out, and leaving. I had no problems with the hostel, or premises, until I was leaving. I had to wait 1.5hrs for the lock to be opened. An employee with authority abused his power and I felt unsafe, and all I wanted was to leave. Take note in this online review, this isn't good, or wise of staff members to do this to customers. Withholding passports, and credit cards are illegal, and I didn't owe any money. You have my contact information, if you chose to email and talk about this further I m happy to set up a time with you. Another women opened the locker for me without hesitation and apologized, so thank you to her for being there.

Tasty Dayz Hostel

Our property has a hostel part with dorm beds and private cabinas and suites to rent as well. Tasty Dayz Hostel sits on a beautiful land with gardens everywhere where you can see monkeys, sloths and many others. We are located right the other side of the street from the main Cocles beach.

My FAVORITE hostel experience ever!

Reviewed By lilylazer

This place is everything you look for in a hostel, but with SO much more. The location is directly across the street from the beach and nestled in beautiful grounds full of beautiful flowers and tress. It's just a few minutes to ride in to town for essentials or to explore, or just down the road from the main Cocles Beach stretch and the Jaguar Rescue Center. I booked a private room - it had all the essentials necessary for a great stay. The room was clean, the bedding was soft, the air conditioner kept me *very* happy and cool, and the water pressure in the shower is better than what I have at home. The internet is fast, the on-site cantina is delicious and full of nightly activities, the staff are super nice and helpful, the grounds felt safe and secure (and quiet!), and it was a perfect home base to get to know Puerto Viejo and the surrounding areas. I loved snorkeling around the big rock at Cocles that's a less than three minute walk from my room's door to the shoreline - rays, reefs, and lots of fish in some pretty dramatic underwater geography. And yes, you are in tropical location. There will be bugs. If that's not your thing, you might want to stay out of Costa Rica entirely. I honestly experienced less creepy-crawlies here than my last two trips (once in a more upscale hotel, and the other in a jungle house). I will absolutely be staying here on my next trip to PV, and will recommend it to all my friends! p.s. - solo female traveller, no issues because I know not to be out and about in problematic places or at certain times. Follow the advice of the staff and you'll be golden! I also packed ear plugs (cos hostel, duh) but never had to use them.

Oasis

Very bad hostel!

Reviewed By 2021luce

The hostel was an absolute nightmare! When we arrived, everything seemed more or less okay. But at second glance, you see how dirty everything is in reality. The rooms are more or less okay (take mosquito nets, very many cockroaches!). The kitchen and lounge is completely in the sand, catch basin for food scraps that fall down and pee of the two dogs. Disgusting! The kitchen is absolutely disgusting! Everywhere are used things lying around, the washing up absolutely impossible, because everywhere used dishes lying around. The cleaning lady always came in the morning, but in the afternoon the toilet was always completely pissed and dirty. The hallway stinks of diapers and wet dog. Tom was friendly at the reception, but hardly there and his volunteers have absolutely no idea of anything and you have to find out everything yourself somehow. We sat for 1 hour with power outage in the dark and no water and he just took off. In the same night he stormed into the dormitory at 3 am and dragged somebody out of bed not minding thathe woke everybody up. When we wanted to check out early the next day and he asked us why and we pointed out the lack of cleanliness, he showed absolutely no understanding and blamed us. There are definitely better hostels for the same price in puerto viejo!

simple but relaxing

Reviewed By CooperativaElParche

is not the most luxurious place you can know but for what you are paying you can´t expect anything else, although it´s something basic they took the time to do something nice, for example, my friend went from room to room checking that each room had towels with different decoration, that was impressive and that detail is well appreciated, sheets were clean and the floor, Mrs. Patricia, i think she´s the manager, very nice person, we didn´t ask for any info about tours so no idea if she knows something about it, but i saw a table with lots of flyers, if you like to cook there is a small kitchen, you better buy your own things to cook like oil, I didn´t see much there to use, some places they have a section of "things other travelers left so you can use".. we didn't cook but that is what I saw there, oh,we only made coffee and we had to buy our own grounded coffee, so... you also have some tables and seats.. quiet place to relax, at least for us, our room with private bathroom facing the sea, it was perfect, specially if you have a couple of hammocks there, you can't complain about anything, well, i do, in some parts of the room there were bloodstains i suppose mosquitos, besides that, all good. oh and tthe dog, i forgot his name, what a lovely and smart puppy. we stayed 2 nights.

down an empty dirt road far from anything, filthy walls, cobwebs on ceilings, furniture looks like came from a dump, no noise reduction at all. I have stayed at over a hundred hostels and this would easily be in the bottom 3. They put a lot of effort into trying to make the outside look cool but none into functioning. Staff kitchen is bigger than guests. Buildings are nothing more than garages and just as dirty. Black mold in bathroom stalls. Thick coat of grime on everything. Cats on dishes.

Highly recommend hostel bogue

Reviewed By HelenStewpot

Spent two nights in Tortuguero at Hostel Turtle Bogue. Met straight off boat (organised by Hostel owner) by guide Roberto who took us to hostel and explained the various activities available. Clean room with shared kitchen (only one other bedroom) so was almost like a private house. Use of kitchen and even used the washing machine. Air con definitely a plus. What I liked the most was the fact it was opposite the beach, with hamacs on the porch. Very chilled. Whilst at Tortuguero did the night viewing of the turtles and then early next morning went on small boat with Guide Roberto to explore the rivers and canals. Great chap and we loved the tour. Went into tiny canals and saw some great wildlife. We travelled there by boat from Moin (4 hours) and then on the way back took boat to La Pavona (45 mins) then easy connection for bus to Cariari then direct bus to San Jose.
