My husband and I travel constantly all over the world and ALWAYS hire private guides. I cannot recommend Joyce highly enough. I am extremely particular about everything--from the type of car we travel in, to choosing the best five-star hotels wherever we go, to where we eat each meal. I enjoy working with a guide who knows the region well and can make knowledgeable recommendations; one who will help me plan our itinerary down to the last detail. Joyce has the patience of a saint; she not only planned ONE detailed itinerary, but when a health issue potentially interfered with our plans and we had to make some major adjustments to both dates and places, at the last minute she she ended up planning a SECOND totally different vacation for us (though I strongly recommend you book as early as possible--since she has many repeat customers, as we will no doubt become!). Not only is she extremely reliable and punctual (I don't think there was one email of the innumerable ones I sent her that was not answered within a few hours--even with a six hour time difference to the US from Belgium!), she also has a great personality. You will no doubt find her charming and extremely accommodating. No matter where we went, the locals knew her and adore her. Instead of the usual tourist traps, she took us places we never would have found on our own (including a chocolate store where we bought the best chocolate ever). No matter the request, she did her very best to fulfill it. On our last day, she even arranged to retrieve my fur hat from a restaurant in Ghent where I had accidentally left it (nearly an hour away) and have it delivered to my hotel! Joyce definitely goes "BEYOND" what you hope for in a guide!

5. The Medieval Castles Tour

Brussels, Belgium Mike Eyns Tours

Come with me on a fantastical journey into the Middle Ages as we travel the winding country roads along the River Meuse and spend some time discovering our marvelous heritage. We will visit some of our most enchanting castles and chateaus on a full day excursion that will have you thinking you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. There are nearly 3,000 castles scattered throughout Belgium - some are still occupied by descendants of the originally aristocracy, while some are in ruins. We will visit several of these fascinating sites located along the serpentine river within the Meuse Valley and along the rocky outcrops of the Ardennes. Our medieval castles tour will take us to the historical cities and picturesque villages of Namur, Dinant and Celles. Your medieval castles tour will be one of the most memorable experiences of your journey through the magical countryside of Belgium.

Thankfully, the battlefield is largely as it appeared in 1815. Rolling hills, farm fields, the wooded and walled Hougoumont (well-restored) and la Haye Saint (not so much). Still, the vibe and the atmosphere is evocative of the crucial Napoleonic struggle that took place here. The museum is excellent. Creative displays, lots of artifacts. The great Lions mound is a bit of a distraction. But it does afford spectacular views of the entire battlefield. Two downsides: the busy road that runs right through the field, north to south, is a little offputting. And Napoleon’s command position was overgrown with shrubs when I was there.

We spent 4 days in Brussels just before Christmas, returning home Christmas Eve. The markets were lovely, very busy and plenty of stalls. However, we were very disappointed in the lack of Christmas music that was played around all the markets. Even in the evening with all the lights and the number of people out there was still very little Christmas music being played. We had a day in Bruge and visited the markets there and still very little Christmas music. Being so near to Christmas being able to listen to Christmas songs would add to the atmosphere.

Dinant is a city in Belgium’s Walloon Region. It’s on the banks of the Meuse River and backed by steep cliffs. Perched on an outcrop above town is the centuries-old fortified Citadel. It's now a museum with sweeping views. Below it is the Gothic Collegiate Church of Our Lady. Nearby, on the site of saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax’s birthplace, Mr. Sax’s House has interactive exhibits on the instrument’s development. Namur is the capital city of the Wallonia region of Belgium. At the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers is the Citadel, a medieval fortress with 7km of underground passages, gardens, views and a golden statue of a giant turtle. In town, the Felicien Rops Museum focuses on the works of this 19th-century, Namur-born erotic artist. The baroque St. Loup Church has marble columns and a richly carved ceiling.
