Avdat National Park

In the heart of the desert, on a hilltop above the Tsin Stream watercourse, are the impressive remains of an ancient Nabatean city.

Reviewed By KimGTravels - Pacific Grove, United States

Unfortunately, due to rain we were unable to explore this UNESCO Heritage Site that we unexpectedly stumbled upon along Highway 40 in the Negev. This ancient city of the Nabateans was located along the Incense Route between 1st Century BCE-7th Century AD, second only in importance to Petra in Jordan. Perched upon a plateau high above the desert, it was the modern metal outlined sculptures of a camel caravan that alerted me to the site. We stopped below for gasoline and a McDonald's hamburger, which hit the spot after several weeks of Mid-Eastern dining.

What's Up the Observatory of Eilat and the Arava

You don't need a pith helmet or a visit to a safari outfitter to join one of our star safaris (warm clothes though are a good idea). Together we travel the Milky Way and beyond. Our regular Stargazing program is about an hour and a half long and introduces you to many of the wonders of the sky. We identify some constellations and asterisms, keeping everyone on the same object by pointing with our special green laser that appears to actually touch the stars. Through the eyepiece of our computerized telescope and handheld binoculars, we visit the nearby objects of our solar system, the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter and maybe even Mars and Venus and Uranus, all depending on the changes of the night sky from season to season, day to day and hour to hour. We continue out to Deep Sky Objects experiencing the beauty of open clusters, the colors, and folds of nebulae and the magnificence of globular clusters. Come winter you need warm clothes up on the mountain.

Astronomy Israel

Thanks for your interest in my star tours. My tours last about two hours, usually starting at 9:30pm or sometimes 6:00pm/6:30pm in the winter. The first half we do naked eye observing of the sky, identifying constellations, learning star lore, understanding how the sky works; the second half we go to the telescopes to view the best sights of the night. I set up my "portable observatory" in the desert behind Mitzpe Ramon, meet people at their hotels and guide them up to my observing location. We provide chairs and blankets for everyone, and No, no walking is required. The planets and stars are too far away! We let our eyes do the walking. I can usually take people in my own car up to my observing location. But if my car is full I may ask you to follow me in yours the short distance to my observing location (about 3 kilometers) behind town. No four-wheel drive needed.

Adam Sela

We have been leading desert adventure tours in the Negev since 1991, We host most of our activities "in house" using a well trained team of expert guides. Part of any adventure is meeting the locals and learning about them and their lifstyles. We encourage our staff to give back to the community and when not 'at work' they can often be found volunteering with the regional Search and Rescue Team or providing medical assistance as first responders or volunteering with the regional Border Police units or volunteering with the National Parks Service helping preserve the region's wild life. Our back office, expertly run by Pazit, leaves the team to be with you and not fielding phone calls or running around the next or last client. This also means that 5 days a week, during office hours, Pazit is available to help you set up your Negev adventure. After the office 'closes' the calls bounce on to Adam who is ever happy to help. We look forward to being part of your Israel and Negev adventure - join us for an unforgetable wilderness experience. Guided jeep tours, camping safaris, star gazing, rappelling, canyoning, zip lines, out door catering, hikes, mountain bicycles and much more....
