10 Hidden Gems Things to do in Breckenridge That You Shouldn't Miss

June 4, 2021 Phylicia Berquist

Once a mountain mining town decimated and nearly destroyed by river dredging, the surprisingly versatile Breckenridge has bounced back over the last century to become one of Colorado's top year round alpine getaways, with all-seasons activities galore. Restoration of the river area has led to the creation of pristine hiking trails and greenery in the summer months, but winter is the real draw. Skiers flock to the groomed slopes, chutes and bowls of Breckenridge Ski Resort by the million.

Mohawk Lake Trail

Reviewed By mitchellm915

Pretty straightforward hike with beautiful waterfalls, lakes and above tree line views. About 6 miles round trip from the lower trailhead parking area where you can take the road or catch Spruce Creek Trail through the pines. Suggest you bring a lunch or snacks and plenty of water or a water filter. Trekking poles will help to make your way through some of the rock areas, but are not required. We took about 4.5 hours, taking our time, sitting up above the upper lake to enjoy lunch with a view. Morning hours are best to avoid the afternoon storms.

We had such a great time here and it was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation! We were greeted by the owner and staff members with such kindness, they really made us feel welcome! We went into the special agent room first- it was challenging but very fun and interactive! After, we went into the Harry Potter room- it was such a blast and you didn’t need any knowledge of the series to enjoy it (although it was especially awesome being a fan) Our family loved it here and whenever we are in Breckinridge next we will be sure to make a stop here!

We came to Breckenridge two years ago and there were two places we said we would go back to on this visit. The first on our list was the Cheese Shop of Breckenridge. Privately owned by a young couple that are so happy to serve you and let you sample the cheeses before you purchase. It is small businesses like this one that we LOVE to support in anyway we can. It is simple, a trip to Breckenridge without a stop here for some amazing cheese, sausage and sandwiches wouldn’t be complete. You MUST stop by, enjoy and support this wonderful place. I didn’t get any pictures but it is easy to find. It is located right off main street in a small shopping mall. Located just across from the Continental Divide Winery, the other place we had to go to! Stop and enjoy.

This Overlook is just a few miles north of Breckenridge - easy to get to. The overlook has amazing views of Lake Dillon. There is a wonderful loop trail that the overlook is on. You can head left or right from the parking lot and you will come to the overlook shortly. Easy hike for people - saw families picnicking as well on the picnic tables at the eastern side of the loop trail.

Skinny Winter

Reviewed By K1721DMdannym - Prairieville, United States

I visited Skinny Winter Gifts on a trip to Breckenridge. We saw some things that we liked but didn't get them at that time. When I got home, I called and spoke to Melissa. I told her what I was looking at (some cute pig Christmas ornaments for my wife). She was nice enough to take a picture of each one, number each one and send them to me. I picked the one I wanted, she boxed it up and brought it to the post office to mail it to me. This was the second time I did this. Last year I spoke to a gentleman. I didn't get his name, but he was just as nice and helpful as Melissa was. I have never had service like this before. We are going back to Breckenridge in January. I will absolutely go by Skinny Winter Gifts and get some more items from them. They have a great selection and are the nicest people I have met. If you are in Breckenridge, I would make this my first stop. Danny Messenger
