Garth Wilson Jade

On the road to Shantytown, just 600 metres from the main road, you will find Garth Wilson's Jade studio and gallery. With a large parking and turning area you can come in and see Garth carving New Zealand pounamu (jade). Garth is a descendant of the Ngati Mahaki and Ngati Waewae tribes who were the original pounamu traders in New Zealand. This allows Garth and his family customary rights to go onto West Coast mountain sides and rivers to collect the pounamu (jade) themselves. Garth hand draws the designs and carves all sculptures, pendants and jewellery from New Zealand stone. Come in and handle some of the best New Zealand pounamu, find out about Garth's family history with the Pounamu, see some of our artefacts and discover the meanings and stories behind the Maori designs. Garth Wilson Jade - for that special piece!

Visiting Garth and Jo at the studio is a wonderful experience - you hear about the journey of the pieces, from how Garth and his family search the rivers for the raw stone, how he carries them back and works on them for months, first crudely then intricately to make the most beautiful pounamu we have ever seen. We commissioned a piece for a very special occasion and the result was so much better than we had hoped for, and learning how to wear it before gifting it so your mana is gifted too just made it so very personal. Thank you Garth and Jo, Arohanui (much love)

It was a pleasure to meet Warren and Catherine. They were so knowledgeable and friendly. Warren spent a long time to help us to choose the right pieces. We left the shop happy with 3 lovely pieces. We were so glad that we found this shop by chance as it was off the main street. It's a nice shop to visit if you are in Greymouth.

I was impressed with the detailed discussion about the tools and techniques required to turn greenstone into wearables. Being a crafts person I appreciated the willingness to share info on tools and techniques. The end products are both beautiful and true to the nature of the stone. I purchase a stone that is almost black. Not being a fan of greenie jade, the stone I found was exquisite!

We came across the Curiosity Shoppe just as we were passing through Ranfurly on the Central Otago Rail Trail. If you are into antiques then this relatively hidden spot is worth a look. They have a really eclectic range of ceramics, pottery, cutlery, and glassware etc. We pulled up our bikes just for a look and left with our panniers filled with carefully wrapped Crown Lynn treasures. They also offer shipping which is much more sensible than bumping down the trail with crockery!

Diamond engagement rings, custom design wedding jewellery, dress rings, bracelets, pendants, brooches and silverware that offer pure contemporary lines and sculptural elegance have become the trademarks of the Jens Hansen workshop. All the jewellery is handcrafted, original, precious and crafted 'to be worn'. This simple philosophy rewards us with creative pieces that we all can embrace, afford and love, and was also the reason Peter Jackson asked Jens Hansen to design and make the ring depicted on screen as The One Ring™ for his film version of J. R. R. Tolkien's famous The Lord of the Rings™books. History Established in 1968 The Jens Hansen Gold and Silversmith Workshop was borne from passion of creativity and experimentation. The first Nelson workshop, set up in 1968, was in the front room of the family home at 8 Alton Street. This quickly became a centre for the local arts community, where Jens's talent, energy, enthusiasm, and outspoken personality drew people in from all over the world, and where Jens trained, worked with and influenced many of New Zealand's leading contemporary jewellers.Meet the Business Owner: Halfdan H.Halfdan is Jens Hansen's elder son, and has been director of the store for the last five years. This is a must visit. The staff warmly greeted us as we entered the shop and we were offered three different tastings while we were there. It was interesting to watch the chocolatiers at work. Making chocolate really is a labour of love. Although the chocolate is on the expensive side, it is quality and very delicious. We took home a bag of brittle to enjoy.
