10 Game & Entertainment Centers in Canterbury Region That You Shouldn't Miss

September 23, 2021 Veronika Gaddis

Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the country’s third largest urban area.

Velocity Karts

Two great choices of outrageous fun on 3 wheels: -Wind powered blokart (land yachts) and Electric Driftkarts. We have two purpose built tracks in Christchurch where you can hire a kart and have some fun with family, friends and colleagues. Blokarts are an amazingly inclusive activity for all ages (8 to 80+) and abilities. We have 2 person karts for those who aren't quite able to go it alone or prefer to share the experience. Being powered by nature ticks the sustainability box for guilt free fun. Grab a group of 6-12 people and try our our unique Human Foosball, the only one of it's kind in Christchurch. Just like the table game except you are the players. Hilarious fun and as competitive as you want this complements our energy efficient activities, harnessing Human Power. Fun for all, individuals and groups.

Excellent outfit; very attentive, understanding (when the conditions during the holidays weren't up to scratch for the karts to really go - winds too light - they were more than happy to rebook the time for another day when there was more action free, which was great!). My 3 younger kids had an absolute blast, and loved it (second time around when there was enough wind to go properly!). I would highly recommend this to anyone - I consider it really good value for money. Really friendly and helpful staff; really good equipment and set up. Definitely going again!

Uprising

Designed, built and run by a team of Kiwi climbers and yoga teachers, Uprising is home to a huge bouldering gym, yoga studio and a fitness gym all under one roof. There’s even a cafe serving our own signature blend of locally roasted coffee, and a pro shop for apparel and gear. Bouldering at Uprising is an indoor adventure sport activity. It’s fitness in disguise, challenging and fun for both the muscles and the mind.

A range of creative bouldering problems; there's something for everyone I would think - beyond the climb, there's yoga, a fitness gym, and massages available. If you sign up for 4 weeks' membership, it's just a dollar more per day than the day rate, and includes a yoga class and a discount on massage. I go to a pretty great climbing gym back home in the states, and Uprising definitely stands up (pun intended). Like any successful gym this has also got a well-loved community vibe, and staff that love climbing. There's a lounge above the kitchen with couches and tables, so you can work and fuel up on coffee between climbs, and they cook a mean thin-crust pizza.

Catnap Cafe

Located in Christchurch, New Zealand, Catnap Cafe is the South Island's first cat cafe. Their mission is to provide a safe, fun and relaxing environment where cats and people can enjoy each other’s company and to increase adoption rates of rescue cats. They also offer all of the key aspects of a traditional cafe such as great coffee and delicious cabinet food.

Catnap is a truly special spot. Offering not only perfect coffees, other hot drinks, and delicious vegan and gluten free food but also the perfect environment for an incredible afternoon. The cat area, with its adorable and friendly residents is the perfect place to relax and unwind. A cuddle and play with any of the resident or adoptable cats can turn even the worst of days around and make a wonderful day even more memorable. This atmosphere is insured by the wonderful staff who are always friendly, warm and accommodating, popping into the area often to make sure not just you, but also the cats, are happy and enjoying yourselves. The cats are clearly the stars of the show here and every effort is made to make sure they are happy and cared for in every possible way. All but a few resident cats are rescues or strays from local charities that are adopted out to loving homes by Catnap. Their policies surrounding adoption are stringent and follow a cat needs focused mantra which is GREAT. This is also seen in the rules and organisation of the cat area. The number of people allowed in at once is limited to stop it from becoming too stressful and likewise you are not allowed to pick up the cats or attempt to force interaction with them, although every time I have visited they have happily jumped up on my lap for a cuddle so don't worry about missing out on affection. They also have high towers to climb and a separate cat only area to go if they have had enough of people. As an animal and cat lover it is great to see their needs being put first and their well being put so highly. The owners and staff will bring food and drink into the cat area for you and deliver it to your table when it is ready, and are more than happy to answer any queries about the cats and chat with you. The cabinet food is delicious and there are both savory and sweet options, I heartily recommend the chimichanga. There is a wide variety of plant based milk available, and even soy ice cream for the iced drinks if you are non-dairy. There are even souvenirs you can buy to remember your trip, including adorable postcards with paintings of the cats by a local artist. Depending on the time of day the cat area can get filled so booking is ideal, and luckily quite easy through either their website or giving them a call. While there are a few tables outside the cat area where you can have a "normal" cafe experience that is missing out on all the fun offered here. I would recommend booking in advance and making use of the whole 50 minute slot playing with feline friends and enjoying the wonderful refreshments available. Whilst I have always gone here on dates with my wife the families I have seen there have enjoyed themselves, and the cats seem like a great distraction for the kids to give parents a quiet time to sit and enjoy the ambiance.

Laser Strike

What sets Laser Strike apart from other Laser Tag venues is we are the biggest indoor Laser Tag center in New Zealand (if not the entire world!) Our mysterious black-lit arena creates a thrilling ambiance and is designed for good game flow with plenty of nooks, pillars and levels from which to launch a stealthy assault. Go on a solo mission or be part team. And because the action happens indoors, it's 'game on' rain or shine. You'll have a BLAST!! For those new to Laser Tag - it's active, interactive, competitive and fun! The basic concept is you wear a vest with sensors and you carry a weapon which you shoot at your opponents with laser beams. The objective is to score more points than your competitors. You do not feel it when you are shot and it is suitable for people of any ability ages of 5 and up. We are a wheel chair friendly venue. We are a locally owned business run by a small team who have the goal of making Laser Strike the best group entertainment in Christchurch!

This is a must do, and completely free activity if you have children. A large wide exploration space indoors on the second floor with a view over the city. A perfect place to go for a wet day or somewhere to escape the heat. Large pits and tubs of every type of Lego, a large indoor playground that is unique, intriguing and has a glow worm cave, slide and climbing space. Books galore, games and puzzles and 4 large TVs set up with PS4 consoles and extensive range of games. It hosts a dressup/roleplay space, a drawing space and other areas that are modern and interesting, virtual soccer etc. Lots of friendly volunteers onsite to assist with anything you need during your visit. We had an absaloute blast here. Highly recommend.

Reasonable price for 1 hr. $51 for 3 kids. Heaps of climbing walls seems safe enough. Get a run down and check. Only downfall ( not a pun ) after intro instructors sit on their phones or chat amongst themselves, when u ask for help with stuff takes ages to get to u so your loosing time. Apart from that brilliant If u r booked in make sure u arrive early as carparking is on a busy road that services other business
