Mercado De Artesanias La Ciudadela

For a great selection of Mexican crafts, visit the Ciudadela, four blocks south of the Alameda Park on Balderas Avenue just south of Paseo de la Reforma. It's a semi-covered market that covers 16,000 square meters with more than 200 stalls. It's worth quite a chunk of time if you want the full tour. There are some great comedores (food stalls) if you need a pick-me-up snack or beverage.

We we’re looking for Alebrije (paper mache colorful monsters) and we found a great selection. Lots of junk but the gems are here too.

Mercado Ignacio Ramirez

Vendors at this market sell all sorts of arts and crafts, including cheap homemade rugs.

This is the oldest market in San Miguel, and still one of the most colourful. For first time visitors to San Miguel, you really need to spend a bit of time going from stall to stall, checking out the fruits and vegetables, the spices, and all the other items that are so fundamental to good Mexican cooking. In the back of the market, is another large market area where roast corn, garbanzos, jicama, and fruit slices are sold. In the back and to one side of the open area, look for the stairs that lead down toward the alleyway that is the large handicraft market that extends for three blocks. Great fun!

Callejon de los Sapos

This street is a popular antique shopping area by day and provides a lively musical atmosphere at night.

Calle 6 Sur, also known as the Alley of the Frogs, is a must visit because of the many colorful buildings and the beautiful decorated houses along the whole street. If you want good photos, try to get there towards the early morning as the street will be empty and the colors will look beautiful in the morning light. And also the area near around Calle 6 Sur is a great place to hang around in a café or do some street shopping.

This small market is located on a narrow side street.

Not to be missed, even if you’re not a shopper and aren’t looking to buy. Excellent Mexican crafts, jewellery, pottery, clothing etc. , all in one place. Feast for the eyes! The vendors are friendly and helpful, for the most part. No pressure or hard sell. Some will bargain, within reason. Overall, I found the prices quite reasonable but they do vary from stall to stall. Not to be missed.

El Bazar Sabado

This indoor and outdoor handicraft market in the historic San Angel neighborhood is artsy and colorful. Recharge at the charming restaurant in the courtyard of the indoor market.

We went to the Frida Kahlo Musem on the same day as El Bazar Sabado. The drive between the museum and the bazar was beautiful. We got to the bazar around 10.30 am and it was packed with vendors and tourists. There was so much beautiful artwork everywhere. The shops were diverse and wares were of high quality. We ended up staying for hours, with everyone in the house fully enjoying our wandering. The prices were great and we loved this colorful, artistic spot.

The market has an assortment of fruits and vegetables which you can expect in most markets. Notable to this market are the various types of cheese and exotic meats which include ostrich, crocodile and various types of insects etc. In the back of the market they have the skinned animals so this might not be the best place for squeamish folks. They have small food stalls/dinners so you can enjoy a various types of food and beautiful piñatas on the ceiling.
