So beautiful, an amazing experience and a perfect day! Almost didn't see it because of the wind, so it is not always a guaranteed excursion. The government can close it, even if it is a beautiful day, but the winds are higher. They opened after we thought we would miss it. Don't miss it!

We asked for an English speaking tour. The guide did not speak a word of English. So, we enjoyed the nature and views in the canyon. The van he drove us in had a huge crack in the windshield. The guide was late to pick us up after lunch and mistakenly boarded a passenger not on our tour. We had to return passenger. Be aware of this company!

San Juan Chamula is a Mayan town with it's OWN form of government so please make sure to abide by the local rules that any tour guide will give you. A visit into the San Juan Bautista Church will bring a sense of tranquility and calm to your soul as the church is filled with locals praying with a mix of past beliefs in animal offerings. There are no pews but the floor is covered in pine needles and the endless lit candles to a great variety of saints keep the church warm. Prayers are in the local dialect with saints names in Spanish. NO Pictures allowed. I was presented with a local 'Ilole" (shaman) who I accompanied to his home for a spiritual cleansing which lasted about 20 minutes. Whether it was the church, the town of the cleansing..... I left feeling lighter and better. Zinacatan is another Mayan town. Unfortunately there was a big wedding taking place so we were not allowed to enter the town square or church, but instead went to a local artisan house where the clothing was exceptional and fair prices.

The tour started off fine, we had two hours at the chiflon waterfall. This is an absolute must as it is a beautiful waterfall and a good climb. The trouble started afterwards, we saw people working on the van (never a good sign). We stopped for lunch (non commissioned) at amazing little places near a viewpoint of montebello lakes. Probably the best lunch I have had on any of these tours. It was raining at this point and was still raining when we got to Montebello lakes. The lakes would probably be very beautiful on a sunny day, but while raining they were mysterious and still beautiful in a different way. There were also shops and an area where you could go to Guatemala. This was fun. I had assumed we would get two hours as our guide didnt speak english. We got an hour and a half and were actually late back to the bus. Being late didnt matter much though as the bus wouldn't start. When it did start it ran and then stalled. All the men got out to try and help push start it. This didnt work, so we waited for other tour buses. The other buses took us to another set of lakes to then be transferred home. After those lakes we on a new bus drove for about 10 minutes, stopped and then got back on our old bus. After 5 minutes on the old bus we needed gas, so we waited. Then in another 15 mins we stopped 4 times, and stalled a couple. After the last stop (they kept saying we would be getting a new bus) the bus started and we only stopped periodically for the bus driver to check on the engine. We did make it home thankfully. I feel bad for the bus driver, he did a great job amidst the stress of a bad bus. Overall, I don't think that you should book through viator as an english speaker. The company that they gave us was Otisa, which has bad reviews. Book when you get to San Cristobal. If you book through viator make sure you check who is doing the actual tour.

10. Adventure in Sumidero Canyon & Chiapa de Corzo

Walk around Chiapa de Corzo, Chiapas' first Spanish settlement, which is also distinguished by its exquisite gastronomy, highlighting: the baked cochito, the typical sweets, and its traditional drink called "Pozol"; all of them with very peculiar flavors that will delight you. In its rich craftsmanship, the lacquer, wood carving and embroidery that can be seen in the colors of the regional costumes of Chiapas and Parachico.

On the morning we were scheduled to visit the Sumidero Canyon, Lucero, the administrator of Cepsu called to advise the tour had been cancelled due to bad weather. She quickly rearranged our day to visit 2 indigenous communities, and our family of 4 ended up having a private tour. Our tour guide, Nahum, was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and very pleasant to spend the day with. He gave us a lot f information about the two communities we visited. We had an extremely interesting day, despite the bad weather. I highly recommend this tour company. They are professional and a pleasure to deal with. Our trip to Chiapas was made all the more enjoyable thanks to them.
