10 Day Trips from in Skopje That You Shouldn't Miss

May 17, 2022 Leida Jutras

After belonging to many empires over time (including Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and most recently Yugoslavian), Macedonia gained its independence in 1991, and Skopje, with about half a million people, is its largest city and capital. Despite its age, the city looks quite modern, owing to a massive 1963 earthquake that destroyed 75% of its buildings. Skopje has long been shared by Christians and Muslims, who still come together at the fascinating Old Bazaar, one of the Balkans' largest markets.

The history of Skopje starts with the settlements of the Thracians and the establishing the fortress of Scupi. The town was part of the Roman, Byzanatine, Bulgarian and for short notice, of the Serbian countries. The Ottomans will conquer the city in 1392. They will change the name to Uskub and the place will convert into unique of its kind town, which will be called home from numerous Ottomans, Bulgarians and Albanians. In 1912, the city will be liberated from the Ottomans during the First Balkan war and eventually become a part of the Serbian country. During the two world wars will be eventually given to the Bulgarian country, before in the end to became part and a capital of the Macedonian Federation in the Yugoslavian socialistic republic. The city will start growing rapidly in economic and industrial way. Unfortunately a huge earthquake in 1963 has destroyed a huge part of the town, leaving more than 100 000 people without homes.

Tour of Skopje from Tirana is based on the unique values and authenticity of the Capital of the Republic of North Macedonia. Skopje is now the largest Economical, Political, and Cultural Centre of the country. With a fascinating history dating back since early Antiquity, the city has been the center of many Ancients and Medieval Kingdoms. Known as “The Memorial City of Statues”, it resembles a huge memorial of the history and centuries. The Iconic Vardar River with its bridges, divide and the same connect the 2 faces of the city. On one side, you will discover the Contemporary Skopje, mainly build after the devastating earthquake of 1963. The other side is the mysterious, oriental, and charming part of the city. It is where under the walls of the Castle you may find the old roots of locals, blended with the mix of Slavic orthodoxy and Orient, noticeable in every Mosque, Minaret, or Hamman of the city.

Inclusions: Air-conditioned vehicle, Private transportation, Tour Guide, All Road Taxes and Fuel Expenses, Entrance Fees in the mentioned Attractions, Hotel Pick Up and Drop off

I didn't have any expectations regarding Krujë, but the national museum Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu inside the castle felt very epic and turned out to be one my favorite ones so far in Albania. It amazes me how knowledgeable Andi is about everything you ask him, even specific details! We adjusted the itinerary a little bit on my request, which is always convenient if you're running out of time.

The day tour from Sofia to Skopje is a great option to see one more country with one trip to the Sofia only. The capital of Republic of Macedonia is a unique city that, in the most interesting way, combines the new and the old, East and West, the Muslim and the Christian traditions. In the times of the Ottoman Empire, Skopje is a natural center for people inhabiting the southwestern part of the Balkans. Totally preserved the spirit of this time is a small part of the city, better known as the old charshia, which is one of the main attractions of the town. The biggest attractions of modern Skopje are the impressive baroque buildings and monuments, part of the Skopje 2014 project, which aims to transform the city’s view. The monuments of Alexander the Great, his father Philip the Great, his mother, triumphal arch, marble and bronze statues scattered everywhere, huge ships anchored in the river.

Diana was really lovely and very accommodating. We did a 9 day tour and we basically drove around 6 or 7 countries. Stopping at different cities with guided tours in the city covering all the highlights. She was always ready to make last minute changes whenever possible. She is very passionate and would definitely recommend her to others.
