10 Cultural Tours in Bac Ha That You Shouldn't Miss

May 19, 2021 Vivienne Hutton

Bắc Hà is a rural district of Lào Cai Province in the Northeast region of Vietnam. It is the capital of the region of the Flower Hmong, one of the 54 minorities of Vietnam and of the six groups of Hmong people. It is famous for its Sunday morning market, where thousands of locals gathered, the women dressed in their very intricate handmade costumes (it takes three to five months to embroider one by hand), as well as for the Saturday morning smaller market of Can Cau, 18 kilometres (11 mi) north of Bắc Hà. The town is enjoying an economic boom thanks to tourism, centered on the markets and, more and more, excellent trekking in the mountains north of the town.

We pick up you from your hotel in Sapa at 7am to go to the largest Flower Hmong market in Northern Vietnam at Bac Ha which is held on Sundays. The market is a 110km drive so the early start is essential. Your private tour guide will be with you every step of the way to make sure you have a memorable day. The market is alive with the bright colours and extravagant costumes of the local people, here you will meet Flower Hmong (Red Hmong), Black Dao, Tay, Nung, La Chi, Phu La and other tribal groups who come from far and wide to buy and sell a wide variety of goods and livestock, to exchange news and to renew friendships. In the past the market was a centre for trading horses but now that motorbikes have replaced them it is more common to see buffalo, cows, goats, fish and other livestock being traded. The market opens at around 7.30am and closes mid-afternoon.

Inclusions: Private car or mini van to the market & back to Sapa, Food at a local restaurant where a variety of foods are available for your delectation and delight. You can even try the traditional local lunch of Thang Co (horse stew) and strong corn wine!

We, a family or 4, booked a 3D4N trip to Sapa and Bac Ha with 1 night homestay and 1 night hotel. We booked at Sapa Trekking Homestay, which I believe is a part of travel agency Asia Group Tour with an office in Hanoi. The 2D Sapa trekking with homestay was a marvelous experience. Beautiful scenery, nice local guide and good food. The 3rd day to Bac Ha we did with another tour guide. The visit to the market in the morning was very good, however after lunch the guide went into "fast-forward" mode and problems started. He literally ran us through Ban Pho village and the Hoang A Tuong Palace. He did not explain anything and did not look very knowledgeable. There was no drinking green tea and talking with locals as described in the program. We rushed back to Lao Cai and were dropped at a restaurant next to the train station at 4pm while our train left only at 9pm. We were facing 5(!!) long waiting hours. The guide left us and we had to take care of ourselves and of our train tickets which caused some confusion in the restaurant because the staff was poor in English. Before he left us we kindly asked him for an explanation and he became annoyed and rude. Sapa is not to miss and the Bac Ha Sunday market is highly recommended, but there is no specific reason you shall book this trip through these guys. I did not see anybody from Sapa Homestay Trekking or Asia Group Tour in Sapa during the trip, all was contracted out to sub-suppliers - it´s pure business, no personal touch. This was the only trip we booked through their website in advance, before we arrived in Vietnam, which clearly was a mistake. We should have booked it at a good travel agency in Hanoi after we arrived in Hanoi, as we did with all of our other tours from Hanoi and Saigon. One more tip: book a higher-class hotel room in Sapa is you have the option. Hotel quality in Sapa is sub-standard and you will not regret the extra money you spend.

We had a guided tour arranged by our holiday tour operator. We were so glad we did , as you would not know much after. The ride was very exciting, but make sure you confirm the price for outgoing and returning. The lake is full of Lotus flowers in the summer. Tinh Tam Lake was where the Emperors came to relax, also popular with students who also come here to study.
